Perks for the Parents

This ground floor residence is very family friendly. There is plenty of room to play inside, a large shady terrazza opening off the kitchen and a garden for running around in. There is a large gourmet style kitchen with a big island for easy family meals. It is a large and spacious apartment with a large garden for children to play in and it is good value as it has 1 bedroom. Families enjoy walking around the area, feeding the horses down the hill and climbing to the top of Montemelino to enjoy a 360° view of Lake Trasimeno, Perugia and Assisi.

Why Kids Love it

Kids love the big garden, vegetable garden and chickens (and their eggs), along with the host’s dachshund and daughter, Isabella, who lives upstairs and is a very willing playmate. In the summer, the chemical-free pool with slide is a great draw. A crib, high chair, toys etc can be provide on request. There is also a beautiful playroom opposite the apartment set up with toys, drawing equipment and bikes and scooters. Note that there is no kids bedroom as such - the bunkbed for children is in the open-plan living space on the ground floor. Two travel cribs can be provided.

Things to Know

The minimum stay is 3 nights. There is an ungated chemical-free swimming pool, but it is away from the house at the far end of the garden. The host’s dog (Ugo) and daughter (Isabella) are welcoming and happy to play, but can steer clear if required. As it is on the ground floor of a farmhouse, its metre-thick walls mean it stays cosy in winter and naturally cool in summer.

About the Location

The farmhouse is just outside the tiny village of Montemelino. The area is perfect for walking without even getting into the car, and nearby Lake Trasimeno with its playgrounds and ferry rides is a bonus for families. The nearest train station is 10 minutes away in Magione and the nearest airport is Perugia airport, 30 minutes away. A car is needed for a stay here as the farmhouse does not have public transport to the door.

Accommodation Details

One bedroom ground floor apartment with large open-plan lounge-diner-kitchen, master bedroom with double bed and bathroom with bathtub. There is direct access to a panoramic terrazza for outdoor eating and views across the Umbrian countryside. The kitchen has a large cooktop, 2 sinks, a dishwasher and a wall oven; note that the open-plan downstairs area includes a bunkbed for kids.

Style Notes

Fairly simple modern rustic style. The kitchen has granite surfaces and stainless steel appliances, the bedroom has bright white walls and a modern wrought iron bedframe and the bathroom has brightly colored tiles. It is all set within an seventeenth century building with plenty of rustic charm, and a large swimming pool which looks out on to traditional buildings and cypress trees.

I grew up in Australia but came over to Italy to learn Italian - little did I realise then how useful it would be! But I met Lino, we got married, bought a big farmhouse and 24 years on, we've really put down roots. We do love to travel, though, and dream of having a long holiday in Australia some day but in the meantime, we enjoy visiting other parts of Europe. Isabella (our 7 year-old daughter) particularly loves the seaside. But she also enjoys hanging out at home, playing in the garden and pool and meeting other kids who come to stay.

Megan and Lino are incredible hosts and two of the loveliest people we have ever met. Their daughter, Isabella is also delightful, and my children adored her. We ended up staying in the Cassetta instead of Gelsomina because my sister joined us for the last few days of our amazing week at Villa Rosa. The house and surroundings are like a beautiful dream. If you value slow travel, you will be happy to plant yourself here for a relaxing and reviving stay. You will wake with faint sounds of the church bells, birds singing, maybe gifts of fresh eggs and tasty tomatoes. Sip coffee on the terrace with expansive views of the Umbrian countryside. Swim in the pool just outside your door. Walk up the hill for a wonderful dinner. Or if you need more action, it is also a great home base for explorations. Storybook hill towns, underground cities, inspiring cathedrals, and so much more are an easy drive from the villa. And you can return to a warm welcome from the engaging Rialti family and some friendly chickens. We were sad to leave the beauty and comfort of the Villa Rosa but now we have incredible memories and three dear friends. We will be back next year!

We had a wonderful week at the Il Gelsomino residence. Our hosts were on hand at all times with great advice and help from where to go with our 5 year old, to what to buy at the supermarket. The accommodation was lovely with our own private patio area with spectacular views across the countryside and a huge kitchen with everything you would need. The shared pool was large and well maintained and our son loved playing on the water slide and with the pool toys. The location is fantastic, away from it all in the hills but only a short drive to places like Assissi and Perugia. The hosts' daughter was delightful and our son loved visiting the chickens and playing in the brilliant play room set out opposite the apartment. Overall we could not recommend this enough, lovely people, lovely accommodation all set in the beautiful Umbrian hills.
