This large one-storey Caribbean-styled villa has cool marble floors, a lush tropical garden and a pool, and sleeps up to 10. It’s a luxurious place to stay, with sound systems in each bedroom and two private suites with special touches: one has an open-sky shower and the other has a private jacuzzi. There are three further double bedrooms, and one can be made into a twin if needed. We like the local art, the large pool terrace/ outdoor lounge and the location - walking distance from pools, the beach, cafés and more. It’s a great villa for a larger family or two families traveling together. Note that there are some considerations for those traveling with younger children under ‘Things to Know’.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Cable cars and white sand beaches

Swaying palms, stunning beaches, and wind wild enough to lift your kitesurf clean from the waves, this northerly coastal region of the Dominican Republic is a win-win, combining soothing stress-free down-time for grown-ups with awesome adventures for kids. Although well-developed as a tourist destination, there’s still a low-key vibe, with plenty of secluded spots on 67 miles of beach.
