Perks for the Parents

This modern coastal home in Pleasure Point, Santa Cruz, is well set up for a family or multiple families. It includes green features, indoor/outdoor living spaces, and is within walking distance to world class surf beaches, parks and family-friendly restaurants. Set up with a main house plus small cottage in the garden with bunkbed room, it also includes a fully stocked kitchen and farmhouse table open up to the wonderful private yard and deck with hot tub and fire pit.

Why Kids Love it

Kids love the large backyard full of fruit trees, flowers, butterflies and frogs. The children’s room with bunk beds has 'secret' access from the top bunk to a gymnastics/dance/movie studio in the attic. The local beach is only a couple of blocks on neighborhood streets and is great for kids with minimal waves. Great surf spots nearby for more experienced surfers. Several playgrounds, including Floral Park, are within walking distance.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 days. The property is on a large lot with enclosed front and back yards. Parking for 2-4 cars is available. No access to garage. The bunk bed stairs in the main house and back room may not be safe for small children. Access to the attic room is by a trapdoor in the ceiling above the bunk beds or by a drop down ladder - neither is suitable for elderly or unsupervised small children. Note that the owners have dogs; while the house is very clean, it may not be suitable for guests with pet allergies. No stair gates provided.

About the Location

Pleasure Point neighborhood on the East Side of Santa Cruz is on the border of Capitola and a short drive to downtown Capitola and Santa Cruz. A variety of surf spots for all levels are within walking distance: '38th' is at the end of the street, just to the west, 'The Point' is for intermediate/advanced longboarding or shortboarding, and 'Sewers' is an advanced shortboard wave. The beaches near the house are great for kids but best on lower tides. Family-friendly coffee shops and restaurants, including American, ramen, pizza and sushi, are all 5 blocks away. Grocery stores are about 1 mile away. SFO is 1.5 hour's drive away.

Accommodation Details

This custom family home with garden cottage includes an open kitchen, living and dining space that completely opens to a fenced yard with deck, hot tub, grassy area and small cottage room with bunk beds. There is a master bedroom and bath with soaking tub, a bedroom with a kingsize bed that opens onto the front yard, a kids bedroom with a combo full-bed and twin bunk, family bathroom with shower, and a bonus kids room in the attic with 2 twinsize beds.

Style Notes

Coastal modern. Custom built in 2013, this bright and sunny home has vaulted ceilings, local natural wood throughout, quartz counters and contemporary decor and furnishings. Most of the furnishings and trim are handmade from reclaimed local redwood. Green building includes radiant floors, solar panels, zero-voc paints designed for high indoor air quality. We love the many oversized windows and skylights, creative attic space and back yard ambience.

We are a family of four (plus two Basset hound mixes) that are all native to Santa Cruz. I like to surf, spearfish, mountain bike, woodwork, drink local beers, and am a breakfast burrito connoisseur. The missus is a yoga nut (at both the studio across the street and the hot one nearby), likes her local coffee, and prefers our date nights to be spent at the bookshop and ice-cream parlor. Our two girls (6 and 8) are little goofballs who love to surf and play in the waves, go hiking to rivers in the redwoods, and bike all around town. If it was up to them we would never leave our house or immediate neighborhood but we have convinced them that it's time to spend a year traveling around the world.

Family adventures on the Pacific Coast

On the Pacific Coast, 70 miles south of San Francisco, Santa Cruz County is a playground of redwood forests, surf beaches, organic farms and laid-back towns. Visit Natural Bridges State Beach for the legendary Monarch butterfly migration in fall, and tide pools all year round, visit California's oldest seaside amusement park, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and pet a friendly shark at Seymour Marine Discovery Centre in Long Marine Lab, Santa Cruz. It's a great place for a family adventure.
