Perks for the Parents

In the heart of Sonoma Wine Country, this craftsman home on a country estate has views of rolling hills and a layout that suits families. Set up with a main house with a full upstairs bedroom wing for children, plus a pool, huge deck and patio and a 2-story play house in the garden, there is space for families to relax and play. The separate guest house on the estate has a queensize bed and can sleep a nanny or au pair. Extra treats for parents include an outdoor kitchen and wine estates within a short drive. As a gated property surrounded by trees the estate is perfect for families or large groups that value space, serenity and privacy.

Why Kids Love it

The house is a dream come true for families: set up with a whole upper wing dedicated to kids, there is a fantastic dorm bedroom (air beds can be added if needed) and a bathroom with shower and oversized tub. This area has a wall-mounted TV. The gardens include a heated pool, large terrace and 2-floor playhouse built by the original owner’s daughter, providing a great place to play. The separate guest house might be a great place for teenagers to stay if they need/want more privacy. There is a petting zoo in Sebastopol a few minutes' drive away, and Bodega Beach is around 25 minutes' drive from the house.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 5 nights. Note that the pool, stairs and hot tub are not gated: children must be supervised in these areas. There are steps in and around the property that are not gated - young children will need an extra hand. Pets are accommodated only under specific conditions so please inquire directly for details; an extra pet deposit is required. A crib and high chair can be provided on request. There is parking for 4-5 cars.

Accommodation Details

This 5400 sq ft craftsman-style home has 4 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms (with baths and showers) and 1 half-bathroom. The main house has a formal dining area and eat-in kitchen, plus a small bedroom with kingsize bed, a second bedroom with a pull out queensize sofa bed and a shared bathroom on the main floor. Air beds are also available for this second bedroom. Upstairs there is a master bedroom with kingsize bed, air beds and a walk-in closet, an adjoining office space and a kids room with queensize bed, twin bed and 2 fullsize beds. The queensize bed has a curtain separating it from the other beds. There is also a bathroom with a tub. A guest house is down a small hill from the property and has a queensize bed and shower bathroom plus a porch. An additional kids playhouse has a bed in it and a sink but no bathroom.

Style Notes

Contemporary craftsman. This stunning residence was built in 2007 in the craftsman style. Smartly designed with wood-colored themes in the common areas and brighter colors in the bedrooms and bathrooms, it has a stunning redwood exterior and beautiful grounds. Inside the house, cathedral-style windows let in the light and add a graceful touch. The living is easy around the pool deck, where views stretch for miles across wine country, and in the pretty well-tended gardens. We love the fun kids dorm bedroom, the outdoor kitchen for superior in-house cooking, and the stunning art throughout.

Spent 6 nights with children and grandchildren. House had large expansive rooms, very well appointed kitchen, great views and beautiful grounds. The large pool, spa and patio kitchen were perfect for the warm weather we enjoyed. We would definitely return.

Boutique wineries, artisan picnics and local apples

Sebastopol is only 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean and Russian River and promises family fun in all its guises. Boutique wineries are a must for parents, as are woodland wanders, pick your own apples and pears at local farms and artisan picnics created from the goodies on sale at local shops and stalls. Check out Florence Avenue for three blocks of imaginative trash art, The Barlow for for tasting rooms and fantastic shopping and the Laguna de Santa Rosa, a wetlands preserve with stroller-accessible trails.
