Perks for the Parents

This family home is on a tree-lined street in the Silver Lake Heights area and has a fantastic backyard with play structure, plenty to entertain kids and an easy set up for a family trip to Los Angeles. The kitchen has a wonderful breakfast nook that kids love to sit at while food is being cooked, and larger bathroom has a big tub that can fit multiple children or be used as a shower. Nearby attractions include the Silver Lake Rec Center with its playground, a short walk away, and The Meadows, a wonderful grassy expanse along the Silver Lake Reservoir, perfect for picnics, soccer, flying kites, again walking distance away.

Why Kids Love it

The house is very child friendly: there are no stairs and there is nothing breakable within a young child's reach. The living room is large and filled with toys, puzzles, books, and games great for under 10s. With a couch and an armchair, it is an excellent family room. The dining room has 5 normal chairs and a high chair for a baby or toddler. The children’s bedroom has yet more toys and books, and has 2 child's beds. The play structure with climbing wall, slide, baby swing and swing is shaded and super fun.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. The house is over 1 level and has a full backyard secured with locked gates, so kids can play without any risk of reaching the street. The house has an inoperable fireplace. The kitchen has a professional-grade Viking stove and quiet dishwasher. The most convenient parking is on Armstrong Avenue; it is easy to get a spot in front of the house. The street is completely flat, making it excellent for kids to ride scooters and bikes safely. Car rental is recommended for exploring Los Angeles. Note that this property has no TV.

About the Location

The residence is in Silver Lake Heights, 3 blocks to the Silver Lake Public Library, which has an amazing kids section and collection of books for children of all ages. It is less than a mile from 365 (Whole Foods discount grocery store) and Trader Joe's, as well as numerous child-friendly coffee shops and restaurants. Los Angeles’ key attractions are a short drive away: it is a 15-minute drive to the Zoo, all of Griffith Park, the Natural History Museum, Science Center, and Kidspace. The closest airport is Burbank Airport, a 15-minute drive away, with LAX 30 minutes away.

Style Notes

Sunshine and shade. This family-friendly house is full of windows and gets excellent light, so you rarely need to turn on lights during the day. There are hardwood floors throughout the home, and cork flooring in the kitchen. Mid-century modern furniture and lots of original artworks on the wall create a unique environment. We love the sunny and shaded back yard, the wonderful family room and the charming location.

My wife and I have two boys, age 3 and 6. I am an artist and writer, and my wife is a doctor. We have lived in Los Angeles for three years, all of which we've spent in the same wonderful home in Silver Lake, which is a paradise for families.

Silver Lake, Los Angeles

Friendly and full of independent spirit

This eastside neighborhood between East Hollywood, Los Feliz and Echo Park, has great food, plenty of hipsters and chilled vibe that charms families and singles alike. Pick out your lunch at the Tuesday and Saturday Farmer’s Market at Sunset Triangle Plaza (a polka dot painted pedestrian zone), stroll or job round Silver Lake Reservoir, take pedal boats out on the lake at Echo Park Lake, or join a Family Art Workshop at Barnsdall Park, former haunt of Frank Lloyd Wright.
