Perks for the Parents

This modern rustic family complex backs on to a co-op winery a few miles from downtown Sonoma, and includes fantastic play areas for kids and a saltwater pool and spa. Set over 1 acre, the complex includes a dramatic semi-covered playroom/outdoor dining area, main house and studio, with enough space to accommodate a large family or 2 families traveling together. The studio sleeps up to 4 and the main house sleeps up to 4 plus a baby crib, and up to 3 cribs can be added for babies. Two sofa beds offer a little flexibility with bedroom layouts.

Why Kids Love it

The whole complex is geared around children and is well equipped with games and items for them, including toys, ping pong table, water play, play house, badminton, tetherball, pool toys, plasma car and 2 swings. There is a lot of room to roam and run around as well as play in the pool and spa. The property is close to Train Town, a few miles down the road, and Sonoma’s main town square, which has a park with 2 playgrounds, kid-friendly restaurants, a great ice cream shop and a frozen yogurt shop.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days in high season (May-November), 2 days in the off season (November-May). The house is over 1 level – no stair gates required. The gardens and surroundings are fenced and child-safe with only 2 small steps up to the front door. The swimming pool has an automatic cover for safety – children should be supervised in the pool at all times. The pool has a shallow ledge play area for babies/toddlers and a plug in for an umbrella. Baby care items include: Bloom mini Alma baby crib with organic mattress and sheet, 2 large square Graco playpens, a high chair and kids utensils and cups.

About the Location

The residence is 2 miles from the main town square in Sonoma. There is a bike rental shop right before the main square. There are several local wineries across the street and down the road from the property; the Napa Valley Wine Train is also a short drive away. There are many parks nearby for hiking, biking and play; the Sonoma "Walking Path" – a great bike route – is nearby also. The property is 45 minutes' drive from San Francisco and approximately an hour from the California coast. The nearest international airport is in San Francisco, approximately 80 minutes away by car. Car rental essential.

Accommodation Details

This house is set over 1 acre with 2 buildings plus a covered outroom used as a playroom/outdoor dining area. The main house is set over 1 level and has 2 bedrooms (1 with kingsize bed, 1 with full/double bed), 1 bathroom and a laundry area, plus a living room with a double sofa bed. A couple of hundred feet out of the door down a paved walkway there is a detached studio with kingsize bed, pull out double bed and bathroom. This unit also has a mini kitchenette and seating area with TV. The outdoor areas include a deck, patio area with gas barbecue, semi-covered outbuilding with ping pond and a saltwater pool and spa.

Style Notes

Modern rustic. Taking cues from Dwell Magazine, this comfortable, cozy Sonoma retreat includes wooden beams in the ceilings, warm oak floors and seagrass carpets in the main house plus polished concrete floors and simple modern furniture in the studio. There is abundant sunlight from the many windows and welcoming spaces for families to play and relax together. The saltwater pool has views of the abutting Domaine Carneros Vineyards and surrounding hills, completing the property. We love the Eames recliner, the modern angular saltwater pool and the outstanding, dramatic semi-covered outbuilding.

We are a family of four. We love hiking, biking, swimming and exploring in general. Love beaches and gravitate toward Hawaii where we travel to most summers. The kids are learning to surf and love to paddle board. Also love to go to the snow at least once a year to ski and build snowmen. We joined Kid & Coe because a guest had recommended we list our property with them and it seems like a perfect fit.

Nice house, well decorated. Rooms were very comfortable although not very large. The fact that one of the bedrooms is actually separated from the house was a bit difficult for us since we were 2 families traveling with kids, and we were very unfortunate with the weather with heavy rain thru our whole stay. Nice location to explore the region!

Sonoma, California

Wine, whales and water fun

Sonoma is not just a world-class wine area, but also includes Pacific Ocean beaches with migratory whales, magnificent Redwood forests and the mighty Russian River. Take time to do a little planning so that wine country doesn’t become whine country: there are plenty of family-friendly vineyards if you know where to look. Start with Francis Ford Coppola’s Geyserville winery, which has a pool, live music in summer and gorgeous grounds. The Sonoma area also includes the fantastic Russian River area, the prime setting for river rafting, tubing and splashing about on river beaches in the summer and autumn months.
