Perks for the Parents

This beautifully-designed lodge in Tahoe Donner is close to the country’s best ski resorts and is focused around a family-friendly community with resort-style amenities. Tahoe Donner is fantastic for parents with kids under 6 - guest memberships allow access to the winter sledding area, 2 community pools and a private lakeside beach in the summer, along with tennis courts and the golf course. The clubhouse has a pizza restaurant, where dinner can be served at picnic tables while kids play on the adjacent play structure. The house is walking distance to a ski resort where kids ski for free and week-long summer camps are available.

Why Kids Love it

The house was designed for families of all shapes and sizes to enjoy. There are books for all ages, toys for toddlers and an Apple TV with video games for older kids. The house is beautifully set up for kids with a playroom with a teepee and beanbags as well as toys, games, an easel and a kid-size craft table. In the winter there is sledding in the backyard, plus downhill and cross-country skiing and a snow play area for kids. In the warmer months, there is swimming, tennis, archery, mountain bike trails, stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking in the lake plus incredible hiking. Tahoe Donner events are geared toward children of all ages, including Friday night movies, summertime Bingo and seasonal parties.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights in the winter and during holidays. The house is located on a private drive at an elevation of 6,800' so there is a lot of snow in the winter months. We recommend having a car with 4-wheel-drive in the snowy season. Stairgates are provided. Just 7 miles away, downtown Truckee has shopping, restaurants, bars and historic sightseeing. The country's best ski resorts are a 30-minute drive away.

About the Location

The residence is in Tahoe Donner, a 7,000-acre family-friendly ski resort and homeowners association in the Sierra Nevada, 5 miles from Donner Lake and under 20 miles from Lake Tahoe. It offers skiing, tennis, golf, swimming, horseback riding, mountain biking and many other amenities. Reno Airport is a 45-minute drive from the house; San Francisco is a 4-hour drive with direct flights into Reno.

Accommodation Details

This private 2,800 sqft lodge has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms in total. The ground floor comprises an open plan kitchen/diner/lounge with a media/TV room off it. There is a master suite downstairs. The remaining 3 bedrooms are upstairs: 1 master suite, 1 bedroom with a full bed and 1 bedroom with 2 bunkbeds, sleeping 4. There is a family bathroom upstairs. The master bedrooms are large enough to fit the travel crib. The private terraced backyard is great for sledding and snowmen in the winter and playing outside in summer.

Style Notes

Modern, rustic and family-friendly. The house was decorated using durable and forgiving materials: slate and wood floors, carpeted staircase and bedrooms, leather sofas. A knotty pine-vaulted ceiling and Douglas fir trim maintain a lodge-like atmosphere with accents of red and slate gray throughout. A 13-foot long window seat disguises tons of toy storage and is the perfect height and width for playing cards or taking a nap. Layers of texture include leather, faux fur, plaid, wool kilim and sherpa fleece for a true cabin experience.

We're a family with two toddlers based in Northern California. We love to go the mountains around Lake Tahoe, travel back east to New England to visit family and have enjoyed several visits to Hawaii. Once we had kids, we realized how much the vacation experience has changed - finding a home outfitted for a family like ours has restored our enjoyment of vacations!

I cannot even express how wonderful this vacation property was!! Sarah was wonderful and so responsive. The property was absolutely perfect for our little reunion. We had 5 kids under 6yo in the house and everyone had a great place to sleep and SO MANY TOYS! We enjoyed the pool and the beach, and everything was lovely. In particular, there was such amazing outdoor space. We had a photographer come do family portraits and decided to use the backyard instead of going to another site because it was SO lovely. Thank you for such a lovely vacation spot! We would love to come back.

We had an amazing week at the Rhineland residence! The house is beautiful and the owners were so very nice to work with. The house is kind of broken up into three separate suites which was very nice for our inter-generational family getaway. Family vacations are always a bit sweeter when you can have your own space. I wasn’t sure what to expect so we brought our own toys, book and games which ended up never leaving our bags. There was all kinds of kid stuff to play with and my 1 and 3 year old girls were in 7th heaven. We were there in September and still got to enjoy the great backyard and decks along with the guest access to the Tahoe Donner swimming pools. Don’t miss the nearby Pizza on the Hill for a delicious full service restaurant that serves you on a playground! Also, KidZone Museum in Truckee for rainy afternoons. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend to other families looking for some time away in the mountains. We are already plotting our Tahoe Donner getaway next Summer!

Tahoe Donner, Lake Tahoe

Slopes, tracks and family fun

A short drive to the north of Lake Tahoe, this family-friendly ski resort and homeowners association is a Shangri-la for families. Its 7,000 acres of slopes and cross country tracks are nationally-recognized for their quality and the year-round sporting opportunities (tennis, golf, swimming, mountain biking and more) along with great kid-friendly restaurants, clubs and events including Friday night family movies make it an ideal location for a family vacation. All this, and Lake Tahoe itself is just a short drive away, offering lakeside activities, beaches and events.
