Perks for the Parents

This modern rustic farmhouse is set on a 1000-acre farm estate close to Tarifa, a short drive from the beaches of the Costa del Luz, and includes a summer farm school where children can learn about animals and growing vegetables. Spanish country living can be experienced first hand, tucked away deep in the countryside, yet just 20km from the nearest airport and 3.5km from the nearest town. There is plenty to do both on the farm and nearby: the farm boasts stunning walks that include a visit to its Moorish 13th century look-out tower, fishing in the reservoir, feeding the chickens and the horses. The property’s beautiful modern kitchen is the ideal setting for a family feast, perhaps with fish and Mediterranean produce from Algeciras market, Moroccan delicacies, or home-grown organic beef from the estate.

Why Kids Love it

The house is great for kids of all ages, and has 3 children's bedrooms with books and toys for children aged 10 and below. DVDs, Netflix, Apple TV and more are included. The farm school runs daily in the summer from 9am to 2pm and is optional for guests, with a chance to learn about farming and growing vegetables. Tbe pool is stepped and is great for learning to swim. The garden is very child-friendly with a huge sand pit area for the children, a hammock in the wild olive tree, a trampoline, table tennis table and basketball hoop. There is also a climbing frame with slide, two swings and a trapeze. Toys can be left for guests use on request. There are 2 cribs and 3 high chairs for guest use. There are excellent opportunities for bird watching as the farm sits below the bird migration route to and from Africa.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 days. The stairs to the Molino are deep and not gated - young children will need extra supervision. Note that the master bedroom has balcony access and one of the ground floor bedrooms has direct access to outdoors. The pool is gated and set away from the house. The owners can organise a cook, cleaner and babysitter to suit guest needs. Car rental is essential in this location. The Farm School runs from the last week of June through to the first week of September, costing €20 per day (8/9am-2/3pm) and is run in English; please contact the hosts for further information. The host requires €250 cleaning fee in cash on arrival.

About the Location

The house is set on a private organic cattle and cork estate of 1000 acres in the Parque Natural de los Alcornocales. It is a 20-km drive from Tarifa and the beaches of the Costa de la Luz, with wild oceanic scenery, watersports and views across to Morocco. Sotogrande, also 20km away, has plenty of activities on offer, including polo, sailing, tennis and not to mention golf – there are 25 quality golf courses close by too. The nearest airport is in Gibraltar, just over 20 mins away by car.

Style Notes

Modern rustic. This fabulous old grain mill dates back to before the 16th century and has been lovingly restored into a family home with character and charm. The building combines traditional with contemporary: a glass window in the floor downstairs sheds light on how the mill functioned, and clever lighting highlights the columns and stone arches. Other original features from its milling past have also been preserved, including metre-thick walls and flag stone tiles, which help to make it cool even at the height of summer. We love the beautiful textiles on the beds, the open plan family-focused spaces and the excellent outdoor space for family fun.

Our family live in the South of Spain. I am British and my husband Ben is British / Spanish. Our children are being educated in the local town Algeciras and are fully bilingual. We live in a fabulous area for families - with stunning beaches with plenty of watersports, nature and forests on our doorstep, mountains for skiing 3 hours away, incredible sports for the kids and delicious wines and food for the parents.. Culture is close at hand with beautiful cities such as Malaga, Granada and Sevilla near by and Morocco half an hour away on the ferry. In short we feel very blessed!

Tarifa, Andalusia

Windswept and wonderful

At the southernmost point of the Europe, Tarifa’s cobbled streets, boho shops and tapas bars attract laid back holidaymakers while its windswept beaches are made for wind and kite surfers. Try horse riding along the beach, taking the hydrofoil to Morocco for the day or bird watching, whale watching and walks in the hills.
