Perks for the Parents

This luxurious and spacious retreat is part of the White Exclusive Suites and Villas hotel in the Azores and has a climatized swimming pool, jacuzzi and fire pit. Surrounded by lush, private gardens, it is just a few meters from the ocean and sleeps up to 8. The hotel, with its restaurant, bar and terraces overlooking the ocean, is a 5-minute walk. Beyond the resort, there is the island to discover: whale watching, swimming with dolphins, canyoning, walking, surf and bodyboard lessons are all waiting to be enjoyed.

Why Kids Love it

The villa is a great family space and it's a short drive or walk to the beach with sand, sea and surf. This quiet private space is the ultimate place to return after a long day exploring the island. Small kids will love the playground with a climbing structure, slide and swing, while kids of all ages will enjoy splashing in the pool. The villa is family-sized with no stairs to navigate, and large communal areas for kids to run around and for eating and socializing. Pack a kids backpack to go hiking with little ones, or take older children (6+) on adventure-led day trips.

Things to Know

La Maison is part of the White Exclusive Suites & Villas, located next door. The hotel restaurant Cardume can cover all your dining needs, while the hotel can arrange activities to explore the island including snorkelling, cycling, boat rides and private tours. The best time to travel to the Azores is anytime from June to September (peak season) or during the winter time, when the islands are warm and offer winter sun. Children will need supervision around the pool area, which is not gated and can be accessed directly from the living area and bedrooms. Private parking available. WiFi and air conditioning throughout.

About the Location

La Maison is 15 minutes’ drive from Ponta Delgada, on the south coast of São Miguel Island. Ponta Delgada is the capital of the Azores archipelago of Portugal and is bustling with bars, live music, art galleries, and tapas, with religious festivals and street performances thrown in for good measure. The twin lakes of Sete Cidades are a 45-minute drive and the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park with waterfalls and hiking trails is a 35-minute drive. There are direct flights to the Azores from various European cities, plus Oakland and Boston in the USA. Ponta Delgada is the closest airport.

Style Notes

Sophisticated beach house. In a tranquil, neutral palette, the walls are decorated with macraweaving installations by Portuguese artist Diana Meneses Cunha, specially commissioned with blues to reflect the ocean. The spacious rooms have garden views and are super well equipped with huge windows, light and wooden elements dominating in the bedrooms and living and dining area. We love the hotel-feel to these immaculate living spaces but with the added privacy of a villa. Praise too for the thoughtful design pieces such as the natural tree-carved coffee table and minimalist light-bulb bedside lights.

A DREAM GIVEN FORM: OPENED 1 JUNE 2015 Not just another hotel, but a dream given form by João Reis, an entrepreneur and enthusiastic surfer, who realized a vision on the northern coast of São Miguel. It began from a passion: a passion for the dark, sandy beach that bears its name; for the mysterious blue waters of the Atlantic; and mystic green pastures and forested-mountains of Ribeira Grande. This environment mixed with a desire to transmit the same passions for nature, the sea and, above all, the Azores resulted in SANTA BÁRBARA. João Reis respected the natural beauty of the island and developed this resort to be in harmony with the island’s unique surroundings. Built from scratch, and in perfect symbiosis with the coastal ecology, the eco-friendly beach resort is integrated into its environment. Its architecture, the materials and the framing of the landscape were the three main concerns of the project. What resulted was a site that breathes in the island and coastal ecosystem, providing its visitors with a tranquil stay.

The Azores, Portugal

Action and adventure in the mid Atlantic

This archipelago of 9 volcanic islands has been dubbed the Hawaii of the mid-Atlantic and is full of ways to stay active and enjoy the unique scenery. Sustainable tourism is at the heart of the travel industry here, and adventures begin with the ocean, where you can surf, swim, take boat rides, discover hidden beaches and see wild dolphins play in the waves. Inland, it’s like a geography lesson come to life, with mud pots, caverns and crater lakes to hike or horse ride to.
