Perks for the Parents

This beautiful family cottage in the Cotswolds is luxurious yet comfortable - perfect for parents with a flair for interiors and an eye for design. It sleeps 6 + 1. Renovated by interior designer Laura Butler-Madden, this property is full of charm, style, and unique details. The lovely open plan kitchen is tailor-made for family gatherings and the relaxed style of the cottage creates a laid-back atmosphere, ideal for a rural escape. Adults will love exploring this picturesque part of the country, known for its honey-colored stone cottages, thatched roofs, historic churches, and scenic castles. Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city to hire bikes or hike along some of the many quiet footpaths and nature reserves, or take a picnic down to one of the villages during the summer months to sit and watch a traditional afternoon cricket match.

Why Kids Love it

The hosts have a 2-year old daughter, so there are toys and books for your little ones to enjoy during their stay. The dedicated kids’ room is perfect, and there are 2 living rooms downstairs if you need to set up a child-friendly space (or create an adults-only room!). For days out, the whole family will love a trip to the Cotswolds Wildlife & Safari Park (30 minutes’ drive) to spot lions, lemurs, and giraffes. Take a ride on the historic Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam railway from Broadway station (40 minutes’ drive) which travels through the rolling hills and farms of this region, or visit the nearby Oxfordshire history museum (15 minutes’ drive), perfect for kids obsessed with dinosaurs. Blenheim Palace (15 minutes’ drive) is a fascinating stately home that’s also well worth a visit, with gardens designed by Capability Brown.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights; 7 nights between 18th December – 3rd January. Longer bookings of up to 2 months are welcome. Safety notes: there are stair gates on the spiral staircase, and young children should be supervised when going up and down these tricky steps. This family friendly residence comes with a fireplace guard, window guards, and a bed rail on the top bunk bed. Car hire is recommended to explore this rural area - parking is available on the road just outside the cottage. The entrance to the house is through a charming little footgate - the cottage is hidden from the road behind the beautiful garden. Ask the hosts for a travel crib, high chair and any other baby/toddler essentials.

About the Location

This residence is located in Sanford St Martin, a small village in the Cotswolds, England. To arrive by train Bicester and Banbury are 20 minutes away and Charlbury 15 minutes (all mainline to London circa 1 hour to Paddington/Marylebone). It’s just over 1 hour away from London’s Heathrow airport. This area is known as one of the most picturesque and desirable parts of the country, close to the well-known villages of Chipping Norton and Stow-on-the-Wold. Soho Farmhouse, the rural outpost of the Soho House chain, is just 5 minutes away, while the Daylesford Organic Farm (20 minutes’ drive) offers a family friendly restaurant, pub, farm shop, and events. Other nearby villages to explore include Great Tew, Kingham, and Woodstock, not to mention the frequently-photographed historic village of Bibury.

Accommodation Details

Fully refurbished and extended in 2020, this cottage has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. Upstairs, the master suite has a super kingsize bed and an ensuite bathroom, and links to the children’s bedroom (with a set of bunk beds) which can also be used as a dressing room. The third bedroom has a super kingsize bed and there is a second family bathroom (with bathtub). Downstairs, there is a beautiful DeVol kitchen diner with range cooker and banquette dining table (seating 6/8), as well as 2 cozy living rooms; one with a wood burner and a second snug area. Outside, there is a grassy green backyard with a swing, patio dining table and bbq, and relaxed seating area with an outdoor heater.

Style Notes

Contemporary cottage. Professionally designed by interior designer (and owner) Laura Butler-Madden, the cottage is light and bright - a fresh take on traditional Cotswolds cottage style. Look out for the stunning arabascato marble worktops in the kitchen and the bright and fun Pierre Frey textiles in the dining area - modern touches that are juxtaposed with classic natural materials and neutral Farrow & Ball tones. Fans of classic countryside architecture will love the exposed ceiling beams, original windows, and spiral staircase. We love the Cole & Son animal wallpaper in the children’s bedroom, the pretty porch area with arched window details, and the colorful seascape artwork by Nina Brooke in the master bedroom.

Laura's cottage is absolutely beautiful and we instantly felt so relaxed when we arrived. Everything was spotlessly clean and luxuriously comfortable. The area is superbly placed for Daylesford, Blenheim palace, Birdland - tons to do everyday. Thank you so much and we hope to return!
