Perks for the Parents

This 3-story architect-designed family house is ideal for a family stay in the city, and is centrally located a subway stop from Shibuya and 4 stops from Shinjuku. Single family house accommodation like this is a rare treat in Tokyo, offering space to relax after a day in the hectic city. This house was designed with family in mind, and comprises 3 levels where public space is completely separated from private space, making bedrooms quiet and peaceful. The owners may be able to help with restaurant bookings and recommendations in the city.

Why Kids Love it

There is an all-purpose room on the lower level where children can play and explore with having to worry much about noises. A TV/DVD machine is also located on this level. There are 2 bedrooms ideal for kids, each with a twin bed and small selection of toys and books. The bathroom has a bathtub to make cleaning up easy. Many popular tourist destinations are within easy access on the train without having to transfer - Shibuya scramble intersection, Yoyogi Park, Harajuku Takeshita Dori, Meiji Shrine, Shinjuku and Ueno Park included.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 days. Note that there are no stairgates and that the house is laid out over 3 floors and is relatively vertical with steep stairs and a balcony - young children will need close supervision and we would recommend it for those with children over 5. The apartment is in a private building with only 1 other apartment, above it. An area map with recommendations to neighborhood places will be provided. WiFi and a dishwasher are included. Nearby, the Meguro River is convenient for a morning jog and Ebisu Garden Place has a wonderful supermarket, restaurants, and department stores; there are numerous convenience stores within short walking distance. Car rental not recommended with efficient public transportation nearby.

About the Location

The residence is in the Ebisu/Meguro area of the city, close to the Westin Hotel (with an airport limousine bus stop), Ebisu and Meguro subway stations with multiple subway lines, including JR Yamanote Line directly to popular destinations without transfers. There are 6 supermarkets, and the Mitsukoshi Department Store (with an upscale food market on the B2 level) nearby. It is 1 stop to Shibuya from Ebisu Station and 4 stops to Shinjuku on JR Yamanote Line. Narita airport is about an hour away by taxi or 1.5 hour by airport limousine bus, while Tokyo Haneda Airport is 30 minutes away by taxi. Owners will help with detailed directions to the house via various methods, including taxi/car service and airport limousine bus.

Accommodation Details

Set over 3 floors, this family home has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The basement level has an all-purpose playroom, adjacent to the Japanese tatami room which sleeps 2 on Japanese futons. There's a bathroom on this level, plus a dry area outside. The ground level has an entrance hall, large open kitchen, dining, and compact living area. The top floor has a master bedroom with queensize bed, 2 kids bedrooms, one with a single bed, and one with a bunk bed, plus a bathroom with a bathtub and shower.

Style Notes

Modern Japanese. The house was constructed with reinforced concrete in 2009 for the owner's family and is designed with families in mind. The décor is minimalist and modern, with clean lines and an absence of clutter throughout. Open and airy with natural lights and colors throughout, the house is a beautiful expression of clean minimalism with modern yet warm aesthetic. We love the tatami mats for a true Japanese experience and the sleek lines and modern finishes.

I'm an architect and designed this home with our family in mind, combining the western life style with Japanese design elements. We are delighted to open up our home to like-minded families who love modern aesthetic and family-friendly home design.

We truly enjoyed our stay at the Mita Residence and was wowed by the home from the moment we entered. It is elegantly furnished in a beautiful minimalist way and had every amenity we could wish for. My group was composed of 2 families - 4 adults and 4 young children (ages 4-7) - and we all found the home comfortable and spacious with plenty of room for the kids to run around and play. Lillian, the owner, was the perfect host, providing us with all the info we needed from the moment we booked our stay and going above and beyond -- from offering to help us purchase museum tickets to securing babysitting services so the adults could enjoy an evening out. Vangie, the housekeeper, warmly welcomed us when we arrived and made sure we were comfortably settled before leaving. It felt like we were staying in a friend's home. The location was perfect for us -- peacefully residential but just a few minutes walk from 2 main subway stations and the fun izakayas/restaurants/shopping of the Ebisu neighborhood. I would stay at the Mita Residence again and would recommend it to families wholeheartedly.

Vincent and Lillian were lovely and responsive hosts. The home is clean and in a great area of Tokyo. We were happy to stay here. That being said, I didn't feel that it was a great place for a family with young children (ours are 18 months and 3.5). There are very steep and slippery stairs connecting the three levels with a balcony that isn't safe. Lillian arranged for baby gates, but these did not lock and weren't safe (could be pushed over by our kids leaning against them). We paid for one of these and felt that they were ineffective and just had to be really careful with our kids around the stairs...kind of stressful. The living room area is small without much seating so it was hard to feel comfortable when spending time in the house. I think this would be a good place to stay with older children.

The owners were a pleasure to deal with and we had a great stay! Very quiet, residential area but still convenient - walkable to many restaurants and located between two train stations. Highly recommend!!

Tokyo, Japan

Kitten cafés and ancient temples

Tokyo with kids is an intoxicating experience. Get ready for a fast-paced run through pop culture, futuristic electronics and elegant temples, with neon arcades and vending machines at every turn. Ride the cat bus at the Miyazaki Museum, stare wide eyed at glistening fish at the Tsukiji Fish Market and buy kitsch Japanese toys at Kiddyland in Harajuku. The bunny and kitten cafés of Shibuya and Roppongi are fairytale fabulous, and the Meiji shrine in Harajuku is great for a cultural hit, as are the museums of Ueno Park.
