Perks for the Parents

This magical, romantic property with a pool, created from a traditional Trullo plus modern additions, includes bikes, swing chairs and a vegetable garden full of tomatoes and herbs. Best for older children, it is tranquil and offers an easy space for parents to cook in the outdoor kitchen while kids run around and enjoy the swimming pool. Extras include a wood-fired pizza oven with barbecue area by the glass kitchen, cooking lessons for children and 7 mountain bikes with excursion programmes. A rentable classic Fiat 500 is available for €50 per day. Ostuni, Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Alberobello are all within 20 minutes’ drive and offer some of the most interesting summer music events and plenty of fantastic restaurants. It takes around 25 minutes to reach the coast and the towns of Monopoli, Savelletri and Taranto. It is an inspiring place to do gardening, cooking and simply chilling out listening to music. There is high speed WiFi. Sleeping up to 10, it is ideal for a large family or 2 families traveling together.

Why Kids Love it

The pool is always a great attraction. There are 2 mountain bikes in the garage for adventurous kids. Wild blackberries and almonds grow everywhere around the property; children can go fruit picking on their own. The outside space includes a covered terrace with swinging chairs. There is plenty of space to run and play. The quality of the air, food and the total tranquility makes it a great family destination; the balance between beaches and historical cities and their art and architecture make this a fun region to explore together. Note that bedrooms are split across 3 separate buildings and there are relatively few concessions for younger children. Younger children can sleep with their parents in the Trullo on a double sofa bed. A crib and high chair are available.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights. The Trullo is 10m from the wood house, and there is 1 bedroom in each, plus 2 in the stone building. Everything is accessible from ground level. The swimming pool sits on an elevated area accessible only through a pool deck 1 meter above the ground level. It is not gated or heated but has a comfortable temperature June-October. There is an electronic gate to enter the property and some 100m of private road among olive trees. WiFi is available in every building (the Trullo, the wood house and the glass house) and the Trullo and wood house are fully air conditioned.

About the Location

The property is just 2 km from Alberobello, in the heart of Valle d'Itria. It is near Martina Franca, and around an hour south of Bari. Bari and Brindisi airports are 70 km away. Car rental is essential for exploring and getting the best of the local area. The area is quiet and tranquil, largely rural, with the Ionian Sea and Adriatic coast within easy reach. Alberobello is known for its large collection of trulli - the cone-shaped stone houses native to this region of Italy - and also has museums, grocery shops and restaurants.

Accommodation Details

Set over 4 acres, this 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom home has plenty of outdoor space. It includes 1 original small Trullo, 1 wooden building (10m from the Trullo), 1 stone building and 1 glass building (set away from them in the garden). The Trullo has 2 cones and contains 1 double bedroom, a living room and a shower room. The first wood house has a double bedroom, walk-in shower room. The glass veranda has a kitchen plus a table for 8. The vaulted stone building includes a full indoor living space with kitchen, living, dining, and a large master bedroom with en-suite shower room. It is connected via a glass corridor open on all sides to a wood bedroom with ensuite shower room. The outside space features a plunge pool set amongst a series of lawns, dotted with olive trees and criss-crossed by dry-stone walls and gravel paths, plus a series of sitting areas and an al fresco dining area for those long summer evenings. A 12x3 m infinity pool will be added in 2017.

Style Notes

Italian romance. Owned by an architect and a sculptress, this set of buildings is simply stunning. In all buildings, the original features and stone/wood/glass structures have been kept intact as much as possible, and furnishing and fittings complement these aspects with minimalist rustic-chic panache. When renovating it, the owners wanted to keep the Trullo building as immaculate and pure as possible and restored it on a stone-by-stone basis. The glass-walled dining area makes the most of the beautiful garden; the glass walls are sliding so it can be turned into a completely open area. In the stone building, the kitchen is Varenna with marble tops and stainless steel, and all the appliances are integrated. Furniture is by Poliform and sculptures are in bronze by the host's wife. We love the gardens, the romance and the magic of this unique space.

We are a family of four who lives in London and travel extensively. My wife Julia is Indonesian and a sculptress, I am Italian and an architect who works professionally on resort and luxury hotels, among other types of properties. Both our daughters are born in London and speak our native languages fluently. Puglia was love at first sight for the quality of its air, light and simplicity. It has a primitive authentic factor that suits our search for a place that could contrast a fast-pace capital like London. Family is at its best when all members rediscover 'back-to-nature' values. Art, Food and Architecture are the three central ingredients that are present in all our holiday destinations.

Valle d'Itria, Puglia

Two coasts and plenty of trulli

In Italy’s deep south, in the heel of the boot, this part of Puglia is the home of the trullo - stubby, white, circular stone-built houses with a certain rural charm. Wilder and less polished than Tuscany, the area is overflowing with olive groves and vineyards. Visit caves, pretty white villages and the key attractions of the area: long sandy beaches on both the Ionian and Adriatic coasts.

What can I say? We do love Italy and were so looking forward to discover the Apulia region. I wanted to see the landscape and to get to experience the local architectural marvel, a trullo. The Trullo piccolo provided more than what we all expected. The property is perfectly conceived as a little hamlet mixing modern confort and tradition. I love the whiteness of the construction contrasting with the amazing hue of terracotta colour of the soil. The landscape is truly a dream with the very sparse vegetation and constructions make it for a perfect minimalistic composition. Though the most impressive feature of all was the silence. Being so near to the main road and to the town, we were surprised and pleased to enjoy the quietness of this place. From the Trullo Piccolo we did reach so many impressive places. Our favourite was Locorotondo. What a charming town. Alberobello was also a great place where to enjoy a more urban arrangement of the trulli. The food quality and restaurant offer was incredible. Thank you Davide for the very helpful guide. The best part of it was the meat at the butcher in Martina Franca, Macelleria Romanelli, and staying home to enjoy what our French friends called the best BBQ they had ever had. Actually we had it twice. That's how good it is! The other highlight, specially for my daughter, was to have a mozzarella maker coming to the house and show us how it is made. Obviously this was the freshest mozzarella we could have ever had. What else to add other than we would love to come back and stay longer! Thank you so much again Davide and family for the unforgettable moments we had in your chunk of paradise.

Our family - three adults, two kids - stayed for 2 weeks in July and the overall experience was incredible. The home is beautiful: impeccably designed, appropriately furnished, incredibly comfortable and spacious across the four buildings and outside areas, and a pool you never want to leave. The surrounding property is stunning: picking tomatoes and basil with the kids in the private garden for dinner, walking the farm fields in the morning, and gazing at the stars at night. The nearby towns and beaches are wonderful adventures (and stocked with everything you need), and the home is well located to explore all of Puglia and Basilicata. Davide was a great guide to the area, and the local husband and wife team/property managers were attentive and helpful. Overall, we could not speak highly enough of our stay and would highly recommend the residence and region.

Our family had a wonderful week in this magical place. Our toddler roamed the grounds exploring endlessly. We had a few BBQs in their great outdoor kitchen, drank the amazing Puglian wine, and watched the most beautiful sunrises every morning. If you're looking for a country escape rich in food and wine, with a dash of amazing history and architecture from all the neighboring towns, this is the place to be! It was such a treat, thank you Davide & family!
