Perks for the Parents

This welcoming home is in a great location for families, with metro access to all of the city a 5-minute walk away. Although it is a small house, from the front porch to the living room to the kitchen table to the back patio, there is plenty of space for everyone to stretch out and relax at the end of an adventurous day. It has a well-stocked kitchen and there is a major grocery store just a block and a half away. Nearby restaurants include Seventh Hill, for wood-fired pizza and sandwiches, Pitango for gelato and The Pretzel Bakery for breakfast sandwiches.

Why Kids Love it

There is a toy box in the front bedroom with surprises to discover for kids from infants to 8 years old. There are plenty of board and card games for all ages, and books, books, books! Lincoln park is 6 blocks to the north and west with 2 playgrounds, plenty of space for a frisbee or soccer ball and lots of neighbors picnicking. The residence is near East City Bookshop, Labyrinth (a fantastic local game store) and the local library. The hosts provide a Pack’n’Play and a booster chair for babies. A baby bath can be provided upon request.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. No pets please. No smoking inside the house. There is plenty of street parking, but you will need a parking pass during the week. The hosts can get a 24-hour parking pass that allows free parking all throughout the neighborhood, for a $25 retrieval fee as it entails a trip to the local police department. There are stairs that are not gated in the house. Car rental recommended but not essential. There is WiFi throughout the house. NOTE: A 14.5% Occupancy Tax will need to be paid to the host directly on the day of arrival.

About the Location

The residence is on Capitol Hill, just 3.5 blocks from the Potomac avenue metro station. From the front door it takes 20 minutes to reach the heart of the National Mall. Museums and monuments are walkable. It is a beautiful neighborhood to walk through with tree-lined streets, historic homes and gorgeous gardens. The Eastern Market is 8 blocks away, with many restaurants and shops surrounding it. The property is 20-25 minutes from Ronald Reagan Washington Airport and 50 minutes from Washington/Baltimore International Airport.

This 2-story townhouse has 2 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms. The back bedroom has a queensize bed and looks out into the garden while the front bedroom has a bunk bed with a twin bed on top and full size bed below. A twin size blow-up bed can be added. The full bath has a shower and tub. The eat-in kitchen is fully stocked. The backyard has a patio with a table and chairs; there is also a table with chairs on the front porch.

Style Notes

Family friendly. This historic townhouse dates to 1913 and has a blend of historic character and modern family friendly conveniences. There is an exposed brick and wood stove, natural light cascading down from 2 skylights to illuminate a 2-tone forest that winds up the staircase, and a mini Acapulco chair especially for kids. Many DC artists represented on the walls. We love the garden, the welcoming family kitchen and the city map shower curtain.

I'm Jackie. I grew up on Capitol Hill in Washington DC a block from Eastern Market. I have lived in Durham, New Hampshire, Amherst, Massachusetts, San Francisco, California and Brooklyn, New York. I'm so glad life's twists and turns brought me back here to DC, what a great city. It's fun to raise our daughter in the neighborhood I grew up in. DC is such an interesting blend of history, culture, art and beauty. I love to read. I love to write. I love live music. I love art. I love movies. I love baseball. I have been a waitress, a bartender, a teacher, a decorative and scenic painter, a graphic designer, a real estate agent, a traffic and weather reporter, a DJ for an Americana music station and I was lucky to find myself on the security team for the best nightclub on the planet. I wish I had more time for yoga classes and gardening. I love to cook a big, fresh feast. Most of all I'm so grateful to be mom to a dynamic, energetic, curious, cuddly kindergartener. How exciting for you to be planning your next adventure here in Washington DC. It's going to be great. Kid&Coe is the perfect place to start. Happy trails!

Jackie's home is in a great location for a weekend in DC. The entire apartment was very clean and we had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. The stairs are a bit steep for a toddling one year old, so we wish we had brought a gate with us.

We had a wonderful time at Jackie's place. It's a cozy little house in a pretty convenient location. The living room is small and cozy. The eat in kitchen was just right. The bedrooms felt large and comfortable. It was pretty cold when we visited but warm in the house. And Jackie had everything set up for us that we'd need -- Metro cards, a few staples, muffins, lots of towels, shampoo, etc. Would definitely stay here again!

Washington DC, United States

The Smithsonian and beyond

Space rockets, giant pandas and spy disguises are just a handful of the things you can discover with the kids in DC. From the National Air and Space Museum to the Natural History museum, the International Spy Museum and the National Building Museum, there is no shortage of culture and history here, and most of these spots are both free and interactive, allowing tots to get fully involved. Don’t miss the National Mall (ideal by bike), and the city’s events - from the National Cherry Blossom Festival to Cinco de Mayo, there’s at least one blockbuster event per month bringing the city to life.
