Perks for the Parents

This bright family residence, a block and a half from the Eastern Market, is within easy reach of the Smithsonian and the National Mall. The location is central and works well for families - the Smithsonian is a 7-minute metro ride away and the block is quiet and full of other young families. There are are parks nearby and the city’s best dining corridor is only a couple of blocks away. Flea markets on the weekend at the Eastern Market are great fun. The house is set up with 4 bedrooms and bathrooms with a basement suite ideal for a nanny or au pair.

Why Kids Love it

The residence has a bunk bed, a selection of toys, books, pack’n’plays, boosters/high-chairs, and Chromecast for your favorite Netflix/Hulu shows, and more. There is a built-in gate to the upper floor and you can shut doors in the main level to suit busy kids. There is a small paved garden. Three great parks a short walk away offer play opportunities: Lincoln, Marion and Garfield. Attractions including the Capitol Building, Jefferson Memorial and National Mall are a short stroller-push or walk away.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 days. Note that the railings are a little low in the house - if you have children who love to climb, please note they may need extra supervision. There is no way to access the house without using stairs - so this house does not suit those with mobility issues. Key-pad entry allows security and peace of mind. Parking is on street (2 passes can be provided) but a spot can usually be found on the block during the week. On the weekends, you may have to go further since it's so close to the market, but you rarely need to go more than a block or 2 away. Car rental may not be essential. A double and single air bed can be added to accommodate up to 3 guests.

About the Location

It is 1.5 blocks to the Eastern Market and 1.5 blocks to the Eastern Market metro stop, with great accessibility to the wider city. It is a surprisingly quiet block, tucked away from the noise of the city. Eastern Market has fresh produce, baked goods, and flea markets and food vendors on the weekend. The closest airport is Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, a 15-minute car ride away, with Baltimore/Washington airport just under an hour’s drive away.

Accommodation Details

This Capitol Hill row home has 4 bedrooms, 1 in the basement with its own kitchenette and ensuite bathroom, and a pull out sofa in the main living area that can be shut away from the rest of the home for privacy. Two bedrooms have queensize beds, 1 has a kingsize bed and the other has bunk beds; all have ensuite bathrooms. The property also has a kitchen, private patio, lounge and separate dining room. Bathrooms have a combination of bathtubs and showers.

Style Notes

Modern historic. This home was in the same family since it was built in 1885 until the builder's great-granddaughter sold it to the present owners in 2008. They are its honored caretakers and make all efforts to preserve the feel of a Capitol Hill row home. Classic details have been lovingly maintained throughout the home: transoms, original doors, and millwork, and the original cast iron stairway out front was recently refurbished by one of the last cast-iron craftsmen in the city.

Mom to two busy little boys -- I love biking, walking, and exploring with my guys in our lovely Capitol Hill community. An avid traveler myself, I understand how nice it is to have a clean, comfortable, safe and fun place for our entire family to retreat to at the end of a long day and hope I can provide that to you and your littles during your stay in DC.

Washington DC, United States

The Smithsonian and beyond

Space rockets, giant pandas and spy disguises are just a handful of the things you can discover with the kids in DC. From the National Air and Space Museum to the Natural History museum, the International Spy Museum and the National Building Museum, there is no shortage of culture and history here, and most of these spots are both free and interactive, allowing tots to get fully involved. Don’t miss the National Mall (ideal by bike), and the city’s events - from the National Cherry Blossom Festival to Cinco de Mayo, there’s at least one blockbuster event per month bringing the city to life.
