Babymoon: What it is & How to Plan One

Zofishan Umair

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. If there’s anything better than traveling solo, it’s traveling with a baby bump. A babymoon is a must when you have a bun in the oven.

Why? Well, for one, the bump does get you the best treatment — people are way nicer and some even let you cut in line. But more importantly, a babymoon is a great way to bond with your partner and ease your mind, body, and soul. (After all, every system has been working overtime to create your tiny human.)

So yes, you and your partner deserve this break. Whether you wish to soak in the culture, explore hidden gems in a new city, or simply relax by the beach, a babymoon is the getaway you need before you enter motherhood.

What Is a Babymoon?

Think of your babymoon as a relaxing getaway or celebratory vacation you and your partner take before the baby arrives.

It can be a staycation in your hometown or a two-week luxury stay in France. Whatever you choose, the purpose of this holiday is to recharge your batteries and allow you two to spend time together as you look forward to an exciting future.

When to Take a Babymoon

Most women feel their best during their second trimester, which makes it the ideal time to take a babymoon.

Not only is the second trimester easier (relatively, of course—the morning sickness has abated and energy levels have returned), but it’s also good to sneak in a break before your bump starts getting in the way.

Also, be sure to check airlines and their rulings regarding air travel. Most do not allow pregnant women to travel by air after 28 to 35 weeks for international flights. (Another reason the second trimester is an ideal time to plan that trip.)

Choosing The Perfect Location

A babymoon is not so much about the journey as the destination. This is why it is important to know what will help you relax. The sandy beaches of Greece or a dreamy chateau in the south of France

Unable to travel due to work or pregnancy complications? No problem. A babymoon doesn’t have to require air travel and can be closer to home. A staycation in your hometown or a cozy cabin an hour’s drive away can be just as relaxing for expecting mums. (Maybe even more if flying coach/economy across the Atlantic isn’t their thing.)

Remember, the objective is to give yourself a break from your routine.

Average Babymoon Cost

The average cost of a babymoon can vary from anywhere between $500 to $8000. These costs depend on your location, airfare, the number of days you plan to spend, and the activities you choose to indulge in. (Pre-natal massage? Yes, Please!)

But don’t let the cost deter your plans. Here are some tips to help you plan:

1. Set a Budget and Stick to it

You can have a short and sweet babymoon by opting for a weekend stay at rentals under $500 like this dreamy one-bedroom Georgian villa in Charlestown in Cornwall, UK.

2. Find Properties Closer to Home

Airfare takes a huge chunk of your budget so why not drive to a destination nearby? Kid & Coe has over 1000 properties around the globe.

3. Pick Rentals over All-Inclusive Hotels

Eating for two? Opt for rentals instead of all-inclusive hotels and save money on drinks and food—and those midnight cravings.

Planning Your Itinerary: What to Do On Your Babymoon

Unlike other vacations, your babymoon itinerary is largely influenced by pregnancy hormones and your doctor’s orders. Yes, both get a say in what you can and can not do on your trip!

If your energy levels are high and your doctor has suggested you remain active, go ahead and plan an itinerary full of exploration and escapades. Just be sure to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks and avoid risky food.

However, if you find yourself getting tired quickly, just enjoy the quiet and soak up the sun by the pool on an all-inclusive property.

Remember, the purpose of the babymoon is to help you relax and do what you love. Avoid booking non-refundable tickets to events or museums in advance. Instead, plan the day based on your energy levels.

There’s only one thing that you can’t skip:  a maternity shoot to capture the scenic spots and the magical glow of your pregnancy!

Babymoon Travel Tips

The result of a successful babymoon is a mama who is fresh and glowing. Here are a few travel and safety tips to get that gorgeous pregnancy glow:

Have your Doctor/GP on Speed Dial

Knowing that you can reach your doctor via email or text can help avoid unnecessary stress and even a panicked trip to the ER. If you have pregnancy complications, opt for a city, save emergency information and the way to the nearest hospital.

KISS and KISS

KISS and ‘Keep It Simple, Silly.’ Don’t over plan your babymoon with a lengthy itinerary and an agenda to explore 5 different cities in 2 weeks. This is the time to slow down and take it all in. Think lazy days in the villas of Greece soaking up the sun and the salty breeze or slow strolls around a piazza in Italy.

Skip the Stairs

Unless you wish to huff-and-puff your way up the hill every morning, choose mama-friendly villas that are easily accessible and don’t have steep climbs. Look for accessible options or toddler-friendly homes that will have the same effect.

Choose The Perfect Babymoon Stay

Finding pregnancy-friendly destinations is tough! Whether you’re seeking a cabin in the mountains or a beach house in Puerto Rico, the extensive Kid & Coe directory can help you find accommodations for your perfect babymoon stay.
