This desirable 1930s cottage sleeps 5 and has all the chicness of the city, surrounded by the best of upstate New York’s countryside. A baby swing hangs from a large, sprawling tree in the yard and kids can play on the wraparound lawn. Enjoy a locally sourced dinner al fresco at the patio table seating 8 followed by s'mores at the fire pit and star gazing through the telescope. Inside, have cozy family breakfasts in the chic dining room beneath a wrought iron chandelier lined with faux candlelight and the top floor is perfect for playing no matter what the weather is. We also love the covered front porch with potted flowers and seating, overlooking the lovingly cared for front garden.

What we love

  • From the cowskin rug in the bathroom to the brightly-coloured kitchen, the decor is stunning
  • All the style of a New York hotel but with ten times the space, and a wraparound lawn
  • The lawns are made for playing on, plus there is a child’s swing, table for dining and firepit surrounded by Adirondack chairs
  • 2 sitting rooms so the kids can play while you relax in front of the view
  • Twin bedroom with pennants on the wall
  • Calming and spacious downstairs double bedroom
  • Retreat-like master bedroom with ensuite bath as well as an additional sitting room and office area
  • Upstairs bathroom with black rolltop cast-iron bathtub
  • Kitchen made for creating family feasts and preparing local farm-sourced food
  • You can pick berries in the garden and swim in local swimming holes

We decided to book a last minute Presidents Day weekend stay in the Catskills, and so enjoyed our time at the 1930s residence. It is picture perfect - feels like a beautifully curated piece of art - and yet somehow also manages to be incredibly cozy and not at all pretentious or precious. My husband, 7 year old and I loved the upstairs loft space. We loved sleeping up there and hanging out in the sitting area. One night there was a full moon that you could see perfectly from the window overhead in bed. It was beautiful. We also got to witness the prettiest snow while we were there. We enjoyed the board games, impressive book selection, and kids toys available. It was cold, so didn’t spend much time exploring the property, but my son was dazzled by the tree swing + ladder, as well as the mini-boardwalk thru the trees that ends in a little creek. I can see how in warmer weather kids would be delighted to hang outside all day! The location was also convenient — felt removed/remote, but within 5 minute drive found lots of tasty restaurants and cafes. Also within 25-30 minutes of many other towns (Kingston, Saugerties, etc). The hosts were super responsive to my questions.

Tara and Ryan could not have been better hosts. They accommodated our last minute booking and we are so glad they did! Everything about their home was picture perfect and so comfortable. And, of course, we absolutely loved the area!

The home is gorgeous with tons of toys and beautiful artifacts and touches to make it feel extra cozy. We loved the master bedroom upstairs with the gorgeous tub. Also, the big tree outside with the swing was a hit. The hosts were responsive and helpful. We’d love to return!

A wonderful country house in an ideal location. Plenty of toys to entertain our 3 and 1 year old grandsons and a lovely big garden to run around. Outdoor space has beautiful trees, swing, fire pit and bbq. House is very comfortable and beautifully appointed and Tara was very helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend with our daughter and her family, a perfect family getaway. Thank you!

This was our second time at the 1930s Residence and it was an amazing few days away. The grounds are beautiful and our kids explored every inch with Glee. Kitchen is well-stocked and we played Battleship and did puzzles out on the porch every morning. Amazing hikes close by. We were happy for the fans on some of those hot days! (There is no air conditioning but the heat broke at night). Thank you for sharing your wonderful home!

What a truly LOVELY home. Beautiful designed and yet very very cozy and comfy. That is not always easy to do. When I arrived, I planned to go exploring, but ended up hanging out at the house the entire trip. I wasn’t there with my kids this time, but I wanted to sleep in the kids room, it was so wonderful (I didn’t) It is everything that kids love. You can almost hear mom yelling “don’t slam that screen door”, every time you open it. Wonderfully vintage, yet modern. So great!!!!! Thank you! I will definitely be back...next time with kids.

We had an absolutely delightful stay! Our sons, 6 and 2.5, loved all the LEGOs, games, books, and toys for children available at the house. The interior is beautifully appointed with a lot really nice attention to detail and design- we loved the artwork and furnishings. The upstairs bathroom with the tub was a dream to relax in- a nice break from city life. The kitchen was well equipped and the hosts left some great suggestions for local provisions and supplies. Our party of 5 (3 adults, 2 kids) thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend at this house and hope to visit again!

Beautiful house in the country. We really enjoyed our stay. It was very easy with a toddler as there were many toys and perfect set up. Highly recommend for families. Keep in mind upstate grasses are tall and best to check for ticks and bathe/shower at night! Easy drive to many restaurants and a few markets.

The 1930s Residence was a delight to visit for the weekend with our family of 5 (3 young kiddos). The kids had so much fun playing with all of the new toys, running outside in the yard, and the house was comfortable... the beds very much so too! We had a beautiful snow storm one day and played outside all day in the snow, then cozied up inside and cooked local delicious food and watched Netflix. It was such a wonderful weekend. Thank you!

Loved this house. Went with my husband and 1.5 yr old son and another couple. Great set up as the master bedroom is on a separate floor from the rest of the house so didn't have to worry about our son waking up our friends, who don't have kids. Beautifully decorated, great selection of toys for the kids and the best part of all we found to be the outdoor space with the large trees, swings and fire pit. Have rented several houses in the Catskills area and this by far is ideally located amongst the best attractions of the area: animal sanctuary, westwind apple orchard, swimming holes and also not too far from grocery stores, farmers markets, etc. We are planning a return very soon!

We've rented quite a number of houses in the Hudson Valley / Catskills area, and this was easily our favorite. A perfect house for a young family, and so carefully and affectionately thought out. The herb box outside the kitchen window! Our kids are already asking when we can stay again.

Though we stayed over one of the coldest weekends this winter, we thoroughly enjoyed the 1930s Residence. The owners' recommendations were spot on (The Country Inn is terrific), and the place was very cozy and tastefully decorated. Our children very much enjoyed playing with the toys in the house too.

The 1930s residence was absolutely perfect for our little family getaway over New Years. The house is lovely, very warm and comfortable in the chilly winter temperatures, and full of interesting quirky bits to fascinate and entertain the whole family: from the well stocked shelves filled with art and design tomes, to the Star Wars Monopoly (heaven for a 9-year old boy!!!) and the amazing garden which, for a 5-year old growing up in London, seemed more like a park (she couldn't believe she had it all to herself). We had snowball fights, epic adventures on the tire swings, hours of family contest with a great selection of board games, and a birthday celebration to boot. And when the fancy took us, we explored the local area including a day out skiing and enjoying delectable meals in nearby towns. Thank you very much for a providing such a wonderful environment for us to have quality family time together!

We had a great stay at 1930's residence with our two children aged 2 and 4. The house was really well equipped for the children and had everything we needed as well. It was clean, cosy and had a warm fun feel.

The 1930s Residence is a lovely home with ample front and backyards. We loved where it is in the Hudson Valley. Easy to get to nice places to eat, near a nice wine shop, plenty of farms/farm stands and more. Our kid loved the toys and books and enjoyed using the BBQ grill. We found our way to two great swimming holes and found the home a great getaway from our life in NYC. Highly recommended.
