Perks for the Parents
A dreamy holiday hideaway in sunny Lagos, Portugal with a spa, vegetable garden and chickens roaming free. Rooms sleep up to 4 + 1. Parents will love visiting the on-site spa which offers a 2-hour session: swim some laps in the saltwater pool, lounge on the spa terrace surrounded by tranquil views, then relax in the sauna, steam room and hydrotherapy showers (additional fees apply). There’s also an appealing eco-consciousness here - the farm-to-fork style restaurant serves food with no carbon footprint, sourced from the seasonal vegetables in the garden and the freshly-laid eggs from their 200 chickens. Adventurous parents can book SUP sessions, rock-climbing expeditions, surfing lessons or cycling tours through the hotel, and there are miles of sandy beaches within easy reach.
Why Kids Love it
Children are allowed in the main pool but there is no lifeguard on duty, so they should be supervised at all times. The hotel can arrange surf school sessions for kids aged 6 and over, while younger kids and toddlers will love spotting the chickens wandering around the hotel. It’s less than 15 minutes’ walk from the nearest beach, where they’ll find miles of golden sandy shores and a range of different water-sports and boating experiences on offer. It’s also just 10 minutes away from Lagos Marina for boat spotting and 10 minutes’ walk to a small playground in the town. When the kids need a change of scenery, take them to the Lagos Science Museum - less than 5 minutes’ walk from the hotel.
Things to Know
Minimum stay: 1 night. The hotel is separated into 3 buildings: The Cabanas, Casa Mae and Jogo da Bola. The Cabanas (sleeping 2) offer a private patio, hammock, outdoor shower, and tub platform. There are 2 family suites in the cabanas; Padaria & Baluarte. Casa Mae has 6 suites (sleeping 2) and Jogo da Bola is a more modern hotel building with 4 room types (each sleeping 2). Most rooms can also accommodate 1 or 2 extra cots or beds for children under 12 depending on the size of the rooms. The main beds in all rooms are doubles. The hotel has an all-day restaurant serving fresh, locally sourced food - half board options are also available. There is a swimming pool outside the Casa Mae building as well as a smaller pool in the spa area and plunge pools in the family suites. Yoga and Pilates classes take place in the mornings (for an additional fee). Parking spaces are available at the hotel or in a nearby free car park but car rental is not strictly essential as there is lots to do within walking distance. TVs and laundry facilities are available on request. Sorry - no pets.
About the Location
The hotel is located in the heart of Lagos in Portugal. The Costa Vicentina area is known for its rocky beach coves, towering coastal cliffs and exhilarating surf scene with a slightly bohemian sensibility. Lagos is a traditional Portuguese city, with white-washed villas, local markets and fishermen delivering the freshest seafood from the shores directly into the harbor. The hotel is 15 minutes’ walk from Praia dos Estudantes beach cove but there are numerous sandy beaches within a 10-minute drive. There are plenty of relaxed restaurants, coffee shops and ice cream parlors within walking distance and Lagos train station is less than 10 minutes away. Faro international airport is 1 hour away; the rugged Atlantic coast is half an hour’s drive.

Style Notes
The hosts at Casa Mae have renovated this abandoned 19th century estate and turned it into a sea-side paradise. The family suites have a boho chic style which blends rustic Algarvian features with a contemporary twist. Solid oak windows and handmade terracotta floors complement contemporary neutral bathrooms and stylish modern furniture. All the rooms feature bespoke natural skincare products, free WiFi and a Bluetooth speaker. The hotel is proud of its local sourcing - 90% of what you will find here is made in Portugal. There is a concept store on site promoting Portuguese artisans and the hotel furniture, robes and amenities are all made in the country. We love the sunny coastal artwork on the walls, the cozy wicker chairs and the rich blue hues in the soft furnishings.

Algarve, Portugal
Beaches, golf and sunshine
If you like golf, sunshine and beaches, you’ll love the Algarve. Portugal’s sunny spot gets 3,000 hours of sunny blue skies every year and entertains far more sun seekers than that on its highly accessible sandy beaches. For an easy beach break from just about everywhere in Europe, look no further. Beyond the beach, kids love the water slides at Aqualand, boat trips and meeting the monkeys at Zoo de Lagos.
