Perks for the Parents

This traditional country home with swimming pool set on 4 acres of terraced land with olive, almond and fruit trees is about 1 km from the town of Lubrin and ideal for an authentic Spanish stay. The apartment is centered around family life with many family amenities available, a trampoline and swingset for kids to enjoy, and indoor and outdoor dining areas for a true farm to table experience. Locally produced olive oil and honey is available to buy nearby and you can also tour the factories where they are produced.

Why Kids Love it

This is a great place for kids who love the outdoor lifestyle. A large selection of board games, toys, DVDs and LEGOS are on offer, as well as a vast outdoor space to explore, climb and play football. Kids love the swimming pool with shallow end and bikes on hire for stronger legs that can navigate the hilly terrain. A high chair, travel crib, toys, stair gates and books are available and a babysitting service is on offer, by request. Beaches and the coast, where there is an aquapark in the summer months, are a 40-minute drive away.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. Based in the mountains of Southern Spain, this is an authentic experience, and not in a tourist area. The apartment is laid out over 2 floors but stair gates can be provided. The private terrace is also fenced in and secure so you do not need to worry about small kids escaping. The countryside surrounding the property is made up of terraces which will not be fenced in - small children may need supervision. Very young children should not be left unattended. The pool is not heated.. The owners live next door in their family home along with dogs and cats, which guests may see on the property but are not permitted to allow into the guest house.

About the Location

Cortijo Grande is located in a small hamlet 1 km from Lubrin in a valley called La Alcarria. Lubrin is a pretty Spanish village with all the essentials including butchers, bakers, pharmacy and general stores. Wednesday is market day, when the whole village comes out to stock up on fruit and vegetable, as well as other goodies. There are various bars which serve tapas. The coast is about 40 minutes away; you can be at the second highest point in Andalucía within an hour. The nearest airport is in Almeria, an hour's drive away. Car rental is essential.

Accommodation Details

The 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment includes a full kitchen, living room with wood-burning furnace, bathroom with shower and dining room with access to the terrace via double doors on the ground floor. The first floor has 2 bedrooms, 1 with 2 twin beds and 1 with a super-king bed and a bathroom with shower. The outdoor space has olive, almond and fruit trees and a large swimming pool with a shallow kids area, private terrace with shade, table and chairs, BBQ.

Style Notes

Traditional Spanish. The apartment has been renovated, retaining original features in a clean modern style. All the rooms in the apartment are light and airy and have original touches such as the bath with pebble base and tadelakt sides. White plaster walls, exposed wooden beams, Spanish floor tiles and patterned tile backdrops are characterful and charming. We love the white bed linens, large swimming pool and outdoor dining area with stunning views of the valley.

We are a small family run business. My husband and I, along with our two boys Henry and Oscar, made the decision to relocate to Spain following numerous holidays in the area visiting my mum who moved to Spain in 2004. It is such a beautiful part of Spain, with the most amazing scenery making it a great place to explore. As a keen cyclist, Gary found that the quality of the roads and the dry bright weather irresistible and too tempting for him to leave his bike behind. Having family already based here and two small boys who love nothing more than being outside it was probably with some inevitability that the dream of making this area our permanent home was born. Finding Cortijo Grande was the final piece of the puzzle and the decision was made to set up a ‘Casa Rural’ and cycling holiday business here so that others can come and enjoy this wonderful part of the world.

Almería, Andalusia

This region of Andalucia extends from the coast and some highly popular, much-visited towns, into the mountains, where white cottages cling to steep hills. Browse tapas bars with changing daily menus featuring local specialities, play on sandy beaches and don't miss the impressive Moorish fortifications of the Alcazaba, dating to the 10th century.

Great Place !

What a beautiful spot for our family, me, my wife, and 2 year old to spend a week. The house is in an Idyllic setting, and Sarah and the Boys are very nice and easy going. Would definitely recommend this experience for a relaxing trip to Spain. A good first international outing for us and our daughter.
