Perks for the Parents

This chic one-level home is a perfect getaway from San Francisco, with a spacious deck and with swing chairs inside, plus a playground down the street and wineries within easy reach. Battle tested with kids of all ages, it has an open plan layout and a huge deck, fully enclosed by a fence. Set in grounds shared with 2 other tenants, it is a vintage-themed, quirky space with details including a wicker swing chair in the master bedroom, kids bedroom/playroom and outdoor space hung with lights and animal skulls.

Why Kids Love it

There is a bonanza of toys and games in the kids room, with a chalkboard wall and plenty to keep kids busy. A school playground is just down the street, and there are plenty of family-friendly activities in the area, from a disc golf course to farm tours, swimming, apple picking, and more. On lazy days, curl up in front of the fireplace and tackle one of the puzzles. A pack and play, high chair, kids towels and bath toys are all on hand. There is also a pull-out couch for kids along with the bunk bed.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 days. Please note there are 2 other tenants on the property, but they are beyond the fenced area, so the home itself (with the deck) are totally private. A car is essential in the area to pick up groceries and explore wineries and countryside attractions. A studio cottage is available next to the house with a double bed, bathroom and shower for an extra $100/night. Please contact the host to book this property together with the main house.

We are a small family of 3 living in San Francisco, and spending most weekends north of the city in Anderson Valley. Weekends are for lounging, staying in pajamas, drinking mugs of tea outside and taking long walks.

Anderson Valley, Mendocino

Wineries, redwood forests and canoe trips

A hundred miles north of San Francisco, this north Californian valley is known for its wine. A perfect weekender destination from the city, it has unspoiled scenery, rivers and redwood forests. Many of the area’s wineries are child-friendly with space to play while you sip. Philo Apple Farm near Hendy Woods has farm animals and sells superior apple juice and jams; Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens offer 47 scenic acres to explore, and, for more active families, Mendocino’s Catch-A-Canoe boat rental service offers tours including a night-time bioluminescence trip that will be hard to forget.

The host was very accommodating even in the face of some technical difficulties with the site, going out of her way to accommodate us on short notice. The home was very family friendly and everyone in our group of five adults and three children had positive things to say about the experience. The deck was an ideal place for everyone to congregate and the children's room was very well stocked with books, games, and toys that got plenty of use. The interior was not quite as bright and the finishes were a little less polished than the listing profile photos appear, but the outdoor space, the property's location, and the smart decor more than made up for it. We would not hesitate to recommend to groups our size or even slightly larger looking for self-catering accommodations in the area.
