Perks for the Parents
This traditional Portuguese house is in a pretty village 40 minutes north of Lisbon, and includes animals, space to run and play, and traditional painted tiles throughout. There is satellite TV, DVD/VCR, and CD player for evening entertainment. The kitchen is modern and well-equipped with all mod-cons, including microwave, dishwasher, electric ceramic glass hob, oven, fridge-freezer, coffee-maker and kettle; the marble worktops add a touch of luxury. The washing machine is housed at the rear of the building. A personal tour of the wine making process, plus extras such as babysitting and massage treatments make this a great choice for anybody who needs a truly relaxing getaway.
Why Kids Love it
There is plenty to keep children entertained, such as the donkey, chickens, pigs and horses around the estate. For quiet evenings in there is a video and DVD library and satellite TV (with English channels). This estate is also within easy reach of several great beaches with watersports, surf schools, plus the articulated train tour of the beautiful Tapada de Mafra. Plus thanks to the rapid motorway network, many of Portugal’s tourist attractions are just a short drive away, including Lisbon’s excellent aquarium, zoo, planetarium, interactive science museum and cable car rides. The local colorful markets in Malveira or Caldas da Rainha also make for a fun day out.
Things to Know
Minimum stay: 2 nights. Rates range from 710EUR to 1022EUR per 2-night stay, depending on the season. Tourist tax is added per person per night (1.10EUR to 2.20EUR). On Saturdays (and sometimes other days), the estate may be used for traditional Portuguese weddings or other events. These events shouldn't disturb guests at all – the outside reception lasts a maximum of 2 hours and guests are usually fascinated to take a peek at what's happening. There are no stairs in the house, the exterior is all 1 level but is from cobbles. There is no busy road. There are other properties in the estate plus the owner's house. The interior of the venue is shared (vines and a wine cellar that guests can visit). The house has a private garden in front and in the back of the house. Car rental is essential in this area. There is central heating throughout.
About the Location
The Quinta de Sant’Ana estate is in the small country village of Gradil, with narrow cobbled streets and crowds of buildings, around 40 minutes north of Lisbon. This historical family property directly adjoins the 1187-hectare ‘Tapada de Mafra’, once a hunting ground used by Portuguese kings, and today a deer park and nature reserve. The park covers over 800 hectares, and is home to red deer, fallow deer, wild boars, foxes, birds of prey and many other species. Gradil offers several nice restaurants within walking distance from the estate, where guests can sample Portuguese cuisine, and there are cafés and a bakery also, along with small local shops and markets for groceries. There are larger supermarkets under 15 minutes’ drive away. The estate is within 25 minute’s drive of the numerous surfing beaches of the Ericeira coast, and many of Portugal’s famous tourist destinations can be easily reached by car, such as Mafra, Sintra, Tomar, Alcobaça and Batalha. Lisbon airport is a 25-minute drive away.
Accommodation Details
This 3-bedroom house includes an open lounge with dining area, a kitchen and 2 bathrooms, one with bathtub and the other with shower. There are 2 double bedrooms with space for a crib and wardrobes; the back bedroom has a kingsize bed and a window to the garden while the front bedroom has doors to the front courtyard. The third bedroom is ideal for children and has bunkbeds plus space for a crib or extra bed.
Style Notes
Traditional Portuguese. The entire house has a pleasant, traditional style, with Portuguese terracotta and hand-painted tiled floors. There is a freestanding bathtub with 'telephone' hand shower and marble/wood surround sink; bedrooms have a vintage appeal with an antique wicker double bedstead in one. We love the color, vibrancy and unique location of this superb family-focused home, set beside a hunting estate in a rural area of fields and fauna.
