Perks for the Parents

A stunning country retreat in Somerset with stylish interiors, super spacious rooms and a huge garden for kids to explore. It sleeps 10. This home is a beautiful gated sanctuary with a large patio facing the tranquil garden for parents to relax in peace - this a rural area where you’ll hear more birdsong than traffic. The house is beautifully designed for families, with the stand-out spot being the open plan kitchen: designed with entertaining in mind, it is equally a wonderful space for all the family to enjoy, with an impressive central island and breakfast bar, stylish Corian worktops, an electric range cooker, excellent appliances throughout and a striking slate stone floor.

Why Kids Love it

This property is a dream for kids! Send them out to the backyard where they’ll find a treehouse with a slide, zip line, trampoline and a toddler slide all set within the garden which turns into a small forest in the back. It’s a fantastic space for kids to roam around safely while parents sit on the terrace. The village of Batcombe has a beautiful creek and plenty of safe, quiet trails to explore, so kids can run, hike or cycle the surrounding area with ease. For days out, the whole family will love visiting the historic Longleat estate, with its Elizabethan manor house, amusement park and drive-in safari park (less than half an hour away).

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 nights. A dog does live here so those with pet allergies should be aware (although the house will be thoroughly cleaned before your arrival). There is parking space for XX cars - car rental is essential to get around in this rural area.

About the Location

The residence is located in the popular village of Batcome, Somerset. It's a 5-minute drive to Bruton and a 15-minute drive to Glastonbury in the heart of the English countryside. Bruton is famous for its Hauser and Werth gallery and restaurant, as well the Michelin-rated Osip restaurant. The well-known Newt Hotel and Babington House are both a 15-minute drive away, making this a hot spot for long weekends from the city. The closest station is Castle Cary (direct to Paddington station in London in 1.5 hours). Heathrow international airport is around 2 hours away.

Accommodation Details

The house has 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, set over 3 floors. The principal reception rooms and reception hall are located on the lower ground floor: the hall also doubles as a library with fitted bookshelves along 2 walls, oak parquet floor and glazed partition opening to the sitting room, which has 2 window seats and a wood-burning stove. A couple of steps from the hall lead down to the spectacular open-plan kitchen/diner, which enjoys exceptional volume and natural light. There is direct access onto a generous terrace, ample storage and cabinetry, as well as further storage in the large basement below. On the upper ground floor is the principal bedroom suite, which has a kingsize bed and walk-through dressing room leading to an ensuite bathroom (with a separate shower and underfloor heating). Beyond this is the kids playroom which has a timber floor and wood-burning stove and leads to a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom and shower, plus underfloor heating. There is also 1 further double bedroom and the family shower room on this floor. A short corridor leads to the boot and laundry rooms with access to the attached double garage. On the top floor are 2 further ensuite double bedrooms.

Style Notes

Bright and beautiful. The hosts have created a light, modern and chic interior. The house is positioned on a south-west/south-east axis so that the gorgeous kitchen/living room and principal bedroom suite both have lovely views across the garden from huge floor-to-ceiling windows. Despite its classic and elegant styling, there are hints of an eccentric edge, such as the dusty pink hue of the primary ensuite bathroom, the bold and colorful modern artwork on the walls and the playful Moroccan rugs throughout. We love the tall picture windows with built-in oak window seats which run around the perimeter of the kitchen, with southerly views across the beautiful garden, as well as the pink chandelier hanging over the bespoke marble table and that grand library space.

Bruton, North Somerset

A creative haven in the countryside

A little bit country, a little bit rock'n'roll, Bruton is one of the must-see towns in Somerset. Blessed with an artistic pedigree, it has plenty of art galleries and cafes to entertain all comers (At the Chapel and the FMLY Store in particular), while the art gallery Hauser & Wirth adds a dash of glamour. Play in the woods, visit Frome's Sunday market and enjoy the quirky eccentricity of the English countryside.
