Perks for the Parents

This beautiful Dutch family home is in a quiet village close to local playgrounds 10-15 minutes from Amsterdam. A traditional house of the ‘Dutch School’, it is modern and cozy with a great garden for kids and plenty of amenities for visiting families, including Apple TV, Netflix and Wifi. The open kitchen has a large stove and oven, along with a dishwasher, and family bikes are provided so you can experience the area like locals. It’s easy to jump on a train to reach the city, or explore Holland at large, or to visit nearby attractions like nature reserves, the star-shaped fortress of Naarden and local playgrounds.

Why Kids Love it

The owners have 2 young boys and appreciate the need for space and fresh air - there is plenty of it here. This house has lots of toys and books for kids under 10, and is a great family space with a living room large enough for wheeled toys. One bathroom has a bathtub. It’s a short walk from local playgrounds. The kids rooms are bright and colorful and include 1 room with a a raised platform bed and 2 further kids bedrooms with double beds. All have toys and sweet kid-friendly details, from stuffed toy heads mounted on the wall to patterned wallpaper and bunny-shaped lights.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 nights. The house is well maintained and child friendly; the garden is fenced in. The raised bed may be better for older kids. Free parking spots available. On request, facilities like baby gates for babies/toddlers can be arranged. The hosts are happy to help with any questions to help you have the best stay possible. Car rental is useful for this location but the country is well connected by train and there is a train station by the house, so it is not essential. Bikes are included for 3 adults (of which a bakfiets/cargo bike) along with a child’s bike and a mountain bike. The house has a DVD player, Apple TV, Netflix and WiFi.

About the Location

The house is in the Het Spiegel neighborhood of Bussum, a small town just to the southeast of Amsterdam. It’s easy to reach the city by train or car, taking 15-30 minutes. The railway station is a 5-minute walk from the house, and trains go every 15 minutes to Amsterdam Science Park (16 min), Amsterdam Muiderpoort (19 min), Amsterdam Central Station (26 min) and Utrecht Central Station (23 min). The historic town of Naarden-Vesting with a lovely market is only 5 minutes away and the nature reserve Naardermeer is 700 m away. Schiphol airport is a 30-minute drive away.

Style Notes

Modern, bright and light. Owned by a family of 4, this house is typical of the Dutch School and has playful primary color accents in the kids rooms and design touches throughout. Kids bedrooms are full of toys and fun; one has a bed tucked under the eaves while another has a raised bed. The downstairs living spaces include a great dining table, ideal for family meals, while throughout the house, parquet floors, high ceilings and neutral colors add to the feeling of space. We love the quirky artwork, the industrial-style lighting and the cozy and playful corners, full of items to delight kids.

We had the most wonderful week Joris's home. The house was immaculate on our arrival and the hand book and personal advice made our stay all the more successful. The house provides such easy access to central Amsterdam and Utrecht due to the proximity of the train station and we barely had to drive anywhere it was perfect. The kitchen was well stocked, the beds were super comfortable and all the little touches made us feel really welcome. It has fully restored our faith in city breaks with small children and we would love to return!

We spent several nights at the Fortlaan Residence in August 2017 and had a fantastic experience there. Joris and Anne are great hosts, and their house is both beautiful and extremely functional! Upon arrival we were met by Anne who showed us around the house and was helpful in explaining everything to us. On the table there was a generous selection of welcome snacks and drinks, which was a wonderful surprise for us after our long journey. We felt really at home in Joris and Anne's home and would strongly recommend staying with them, if you are visiting Amsterdam! Polina and family

Bussum, Outside Amsterdam

Green and friendly

Just a 20 minute car-drive away from Amsterdam and Utrecht, Bussum is one of the most green, friendly and beautiful suburbs of Amsterdam. Do as the locals do: cycle through forests and meadows, visit Naarden’s star-shaped fort or try extreme sports with the kids at RockSteady, with its climbing wall.
