All the rooms are bright and colorful and the host has a lot of experience in hosting family guests. There is an extensive CD collection. It is about 25 meters from Calella’s sandy beach, which has a playground and plenty of beach bars/restaurants, and 20 steps from a playground for children of all ages. Everything is within walking distance, including supermarkets, a public market, pharmacy, shops, park and the main street.

Why Kids Love it

There are plenty of toys available, mainly for toddlers and children up to 10 years old. Baby care items make a stay here really easy - the hosts offer a Baby Bjorn Bouncer, Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier, Ergo Baby Carrier (4 position carrier perfect for the hikes and walking trails), Kari Me Baby Wrap Carrier, baby bed guard adaptable for any bed in the home, 2 Tripp Trapp High Chairs adaptable for all ages, Chicco Travel Cot with extra mattress, sheets and comforter, baby changing station, high quality educational toys and dress up costumes and sand toys galore.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days. This residence is a triplex apartment so there are many stairs; the hosts can provide a moveable, adjustable stairgate on request. Every room has glass door window balconies facing the street - there may be some noise and small children must be supervised. The kitchen includes a microwave, induction stove top with oven, kettle, rice cooker, popcorn maker, toaster and Braun immersion blender plus basic condiments. Car rental useful but not essential - much is in walking distance and there is a reliable train service in the area. There is no street parking; municipal paid car parks nearby.

About the Location

The residence is 25m from the beach in Calella. It is around 10 minutes’ walk from just about everything in the town - supermarkets, municipal market, Calle Iglesia (the commercial street with all the main shops), parks, church, municipal square, pharmacy, hospital and the best restaurants and bars). Just outside the house there is a playground and a few steps further there is an underpass to go to the beach. There are more playgrounds on the beach and a lot of beach bars and restaurants. Barcelona is an hour away by car/train and Barcelona-El Prat airport is 1 hour 20 minutes by car.

Modern living. The apartment is set up with everything a family needs for an easy stay and includes a comfortable Italian leather sofa, sleek white walls and playful items for the kids. The compact children’s bedroom has pretty bedding and a lot of storage, including a rack of play clothes; there is space to play in the main living area, which has an IKEA play kitchen. "Where are you from?" is the question I seem to get all the time especially now living in Ecuador. I automatically switch to explanation mode. "My origin is Colombian but I was born in the States - born and raised." Then I get the, ok that explains it, nod. Due to my physio type, I can easily be identified as a fellow Ecuadorian but once I open my mouth and begin to express myself, the confusion and intrigue arise. Perplexed because they cannot pin where I am from, they feel compelled to ask me, "the question". It's hard to pin me because I have moved around a lot. I left the States in 2002, to live in Europe (Italy, Austria and Spain). I have picked up, through osmosis, I guess, a little bit of each country's essence; some of its customs, expressions and mentality. Needless to say, I am a very open minded person who loves to travel and soak up the local scene especially when it involves or deal with: music, art, creative vegan food, biodynamic farming, supporting local produce, sustainable living, yoga and anything/everything with our beloved mother nature. Despite my nomadic tendencies, I can also say that I am very much a homebody. I guess it must be the crab in me - I'm Cancer. I have developed the art of giving places a true sense of home and belonging. So just as the crab takes his home everywhere he goes, so do I. As your host, this is what my goal is for you, to give you that sense of home because if you really think about it, "Home is where the heart is."

Calella, Costa Brava

Sunshine and beach bars

On the coast north of Barcelona and south of the Costa Brava, Calella is a popular tourist town with a sandy beach and plenty of sunshine. Dine on outdoor terraces, play on the super clean Blue Flag beach and take up watersports at the yacht club. It's an easy hour-long train or car journey into Barcelona if you want to take in some culture, as well.

It was an absolute pleasure to stay at Lily's place. The place is very well located - it is literally only 3 minutes away from both the beach and the shopping street - and it is tidy, clean and cosy. The organization of the apartment (master bedroom on the top floor with terrace and own bathroom, a dream for parents) is convenient and the kids felt at home straight away because of all the toys and the nice decorations. The washing machine and dryer are definitely assets, as are the beach chairs. The only thing that makes it unsuitable for a family vacation is that you never want to leave again ;-).
