This 18th century gite, one of a pair, both sleeping up to 10, in the peaceful Calvados countryside in northern France, has particularly good facilities for those with smaller children. The whole estate is traffic free and has room to roam, with donkeys to pet in the paddock, shared playrooms, ping pong tables and a raft of bookable extras, including in-room massages and a baby listening service. This part of France has so much to recommend it: the D-Day landing beaches, Mont St Michel, pretty villages and gourmet restaurants included. The residence is surrounded by seven hectares of land and the owners really understand what a family travelling with small children needs most.

What we love

  • It’s tranquil and surrounded by countryside, with ponies, donkeys, sheep and racehorses to pet and room to picnic and play hide and seek
  • The whole estate is traffic-free
  • It’s a great location: Calvados is known for its apples, cider, crème fraîche and Camembert so why not indulge your foodie side?
  • The gite itself, decorated in blue and green, is on three floors, with a large welcoming family lounge and full kitchen on the ground floor
  • The upper 2 floors have 2 bedrooms each, all ensuite. Two bedrooms have double beds/2 twin beds and 2 bedrooms have 3 twin beds
  • There’s a playroom ideal for the under 5s, stacked with toys and games, shared with the neighboring gite
  • And there’s even a table tennis table and a table football for older kids (and parents)
  • All the bedrooms have an ensuite bathroom with a shower; the first floor bathroom has a tub
  • Additionally, there’s a private garden with seating and BBQ, and there’s an enclosed courtyard ideal for playing pétanque out front
  • Don’t miss the many extra services on offer to make your vacation really special (see opposite)
  • There is also a shared outdoor playground with swings and slides, sandbox, and space for soccer, volleyball and badminton

Things to know

  • Note that the rates listed are per night and that a 10% discount is applicable for a weekly stay
  • The residence is easy to reach from the UK via the Channel Tunnel or ferry services to Caen; Caen Carpiquet airport is 30 minutes away, and there are also easy routes by train and car from Europe
  • It’s 2.5 hours by car from Paris
  • Car hire is recommended (if you don’t arrive with your own)
  • It’s in the countryside yet just a few minutes from the nearest town, Falaise, and close to beaches and family attractions
  • There’s a no extra fee for cribs. They can be added without extra charge.
  • All the stairs are gated
  • Bookable extras include a daily maid service, bike rental, French lessons and in-house massages
  • There’s also the opportunity to book a baby listening service twice a week so you can dine out
  • Food is not included but you can book some special extras, including a dinner made by the hosts, ready to reheat by yourself in your cottage, or a dinner served in their dining room (tables d'hôtes), fresh bread delivery every day at 8am, and pre-arrival grocery shopping and organic vegetable basket delivery

Mark fell in love with the tranquil setting and former farm buildings of Domaine de la Tour in 2004. After extensive renovations Domaine de la Tour opened their doors to the public on 1st of April, 2005. A former entrepreneur in the Netherlands Mark now works full time at Domaine de la Tour whilst his wife Noëlle divides her time between Domaine de la Tour and her work as a communications trainer. They have an 13 year old son and eight year old twins who take their jobs as chief testers and advisors for all play equipment very seriously.

We had a wonderful stay at mark's gite. Mark is super friendly and purchased groceries before our arrival and had loads of nice tips to explore the area. Especially the kids enjoyed the large garden with skelters, swings, ping pong, football pitch and fish pond. It is 45 min from the WW2 beaches which is definitely worth a visit, also with kids (as of age 6 or so).

Calvados, Normandy

Beaches, apples and historical sights

Part of lower Normandy, this region of Northern France is bursting with things to do, historical sights and delicious food. Visit Caen for markets, meadows and beaches, try Bayeux for that famous medieval tapestry, and don't miss Mont St Michel and the D-Day landing beaches for that real life history lesson. Not a school teacher? The beaches, watersports and food may well be more than enough to keep you happy!
