Perks for the Parents

This unique book-lined private home with a green terrace is in Little India, a few minutes’ walk from Canal St-Martin, and includes high ceilings, plenty of light and an excess of toys. A rarity in Paris, the residence is surrounded by greenery and is airy, bright and quiet. Set back from the street at the end of a secure alleyway, it is off a busy street in central Paris, offering you the contrast of a lively vibrant area with countryside-like calm. Extras include many books and CDs, a stereo system, a large flat-screen TV, and WiFi.

Why Kids Love it

Kids love the space to run and play inside and out. They can sit on the terrace, draw with chalks and watch snails and birds, or play inside with Lego, family games, teddy bears, train tracks, costumes and more. Books of all ages, from toddler to reader, are provided. Note that for crawling babies or just toddling kids, there are 2 ungated staircases. Canal St-Martin is a few minutes away on foot, as is the Récollets garden which has 2 well equipped and popular playgrounds.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 5 days. There are 2 ungated staircases in the house. The upper terrace is child-safe but kids should be supervised on it and on the stairs up to it, especially around the wooden railings. Please contact the host if you have any questions about both the staircases and upper terrace. Car rental not essential: this residence is close to reliable public transportation. There is a parking place in the building's garage next door. Metro lines 4 and 5, RER lines B and D - as well as the Eurostar to London and the Thalys to Brussels - are 2 minutes away. The RER B takes 7 minutes to Saint-Michel/Notre Dame, Luxembourg and beyond, and 30 minutes to Charles de Gaulle airport. Metro line 4 runs to Saint-Germain and line 5 to Bastille, both in less than 15 minutes. A dozen bus lines run from the bus station across the road and the stop up the street. The house has an alarm system and is cleaned twice a week.

About the Location

The house is in the middle of Paris's ‘Little India’ (the only authentic Indian restaurants in town are literally downstairs), a busy multicultural area close to the Gare du Nord and all possible transportation, as well as the amenities of the hip 9th and 10th arrondissements. Canal Saint-Martin, a joy for kids, is a few minutes away on foot. Closer still is the Marché Saint-Quentin, a lovely covered market, open every day except Monday. There are good food shops within walking distance, and some of the city's most innovative restaurants are close by as well. There is a public library a 10 minute walk away.

Accommodation Details

This 3-story home includes a ground floor with utility area for coats, storage and a washer-dryer. The main level has a living and dining space, bar/cookbook library and open kitchen. There is a bedroom with double bed, a children’s bedroom with toddler bed and twin bed, a large bathroom with soaking tub and walk-in shower, and a guest WC. The living room sofa opens into a double bed. The main living/dining room, kitchen, and both rooms all look out onto the terrace. A mezzanine level has a study with 2 desks and the master bedroom with queensize bed, ensuite bathroom (soaking tub and walk-in shower) and walk-in closet. There is a second, south-facing, terrace on this level.

Style Notes

Modern bohemian. With white walls and plenty of warm color, this bohemian house includes a combination of Indian and Moroccan textiles and modern Scandinavian furniture. No antiques, but no Ikea either. The house is kept as toxin-free as possible, using only green cleaning products and organic mattresses and bedding in all bedrooms. The house was renovated by an Italian architect in 2014 and its features include high ceilings, skylights and 2 large very green terraces. Details such as an excellent upright piano, books and CDs, dining spaces on the terraces and a profusion of plants, trees and edible herbs make it a haven in the heart of the city.
