Perks for the Parents

This luminous Cap Ferret home, surrounded by gardens with a plunge pool and trees, has a bohemian log cabin feel and is just a 2-minute walk from the beach, oyster fields, sailing school and local village. It is perfect for a family, with open plan full kitchen, family-sized dining area and sitting room. There is a very large family bathroom with very large Japanese style wooden tub and shower. The little separate annexe with bathroom and terrace is ideal for a nanny or grandparent.

Why Kids Love it

The house has a lot of toys and books as well as a fit-all bathtub that children love. The enclosed garden has plenty of space for children to roam and look at the wild flowers or play in the plunge pool. It is 2 minutes’ walk from the beach, the oyster fields, the sailing school and the village centre although you would never know it as the house is surrounded by forest. Ideal for young children and older independent children alike. Note there is no crib or high chair at the property.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 10 days. The property is surrounded by wooden fences and there is an electric car gate - cars should be parked off street. There is an open pool without fencing or gates, which is unsuitable for unsupervised small children or for those who cannot swim. The house is equipped with an alarm which must be on at all times when you are out of the property.

About the Location

Cap Ferret is the most beautiful little village set between the wild Atlantic coastline and the Arcachon Bay, 45 minutes drive from Bordeaux. There is exceptional food, particularly oysters and seafood, and it is child friendly with the perfect market. Cap Ferret offers healthy outdoor living at its best. The closest airport is in Bordeaux; car hire is recommended to get the best of the area.

Accommodation Details

This 4 bedroom all-wood family home has a lounge, kitchen, outdoor semi-covered terraces and 3 bedrooms on the ground floor (a twin and 2 double bedrooms). The master bedroom is upstairs. There is a large family bathroom with Japanese-style wooden tub and shower, plus a separate toilet. Three bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms. There is a separate annex in the garden with a double bedroom, bathroom and terrace. The gardens include lawns and a plunge pool.

Style Notes

Romantic, bohemian and style-driven. This is an all-natural wood home with zinc and copper finishes focused on open plan living with doors on to the outdoor terrace that pull all the way back to let the outside in. It is light and beautiful with a lot of contemporary photography. Everything has been carefully sourced, from the cutlery to the plates, lamps, artworks, soft furnishings and copper drains to the tiles on the pool. This is a haven for a family who loves beautiful things.

We're a bilingual French English family who live between London and Cap Ferret in the school holidays. We love simple but good food, the forest and the ocean, Cap Ferret, laughing and our little family of 4. Our kids are crazy for the beach, animals, running around and reading.

Cap Ferret, Gironde

Wine, oysters and sandy beaches

This glamorous finger of land, an hour west of Bordeaux, is beloved of the jet set seeking a quiet place for the summer, and is known for its oysters and beaches. With the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the lagoon of Arcachon Bay, famed for its oysters, to the east, there are quiet sandy beaches for smaller kids and big ocean waves and surf for older children. There are no museums and few must-see attractions, just sun, sand, sea, surfing, swimming, sailing, cycling and sports to keep you occupied. As the sun sets, be sure to try the local oysters with a glass of white wine.
