Perks for the Parents

This pretty 2-bedroom cottage with a pool has plenty to recommend it - not least the shared facilities that keep the kids busy. There is a honesty bar on the domaine, with a choice of local Languedoc wines, artisanal beers and soft drinks. On Sundays a breakfast basket can be ordered, delivered to the doorstep. The owners offer table d'hôte dinners 3 nights a week, served on your private terrace under a blanket of stars, with an earlier kids meal on request. The dell has 3 double hammocks. The sitting room has plenty of storage space, a dishwasher, a music system and a family table to eat around.

Why Kids Love it

The area is great for kids under the age of 12, with a shared 20m swimming pool, ping pong and pool tables in the barn and a shared play area with trampoline, swings and kids caravan hideout in one area. There are games in the TV room and a library of books and DVDs to choose from. A high chair, baby bath and travel cot are provided on request. The hosts can also arrange activities nearby such as horse riding, canoeing, white water rafting, go-ape, go-karting, cycling. Family friendly movies are sometimes shown in the barn bar. There are tennis courts in the neighboring village.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights in July and August, with a Saturday check in. The residence is in a hectare of grounds shared with 3 rental cottages plus the owners’ home. Their 1-bedroom home on the same site, The L'etoile Residence is also available to book. The mezzanine bedroom is best suited to children over the age of 6 as there is no stair gate on the top floor. The TV snug room on the first floor is perfect for younger children. WiFi is available in the property - it is not amazingly fast for streaming needs, but perfectly fine for regular internet use. The owners live in the domaine and can help with information on the area and organising activities. A wood-fired pizza night is available once a week (contact host for details and price) and on the first morning, guests receive a complimentary basket of french croissants, pain au chocolate, baguettes and homemade jam from the local boulangerie.

About the Location

The residence is in a quiet rural domaine a 30-minute drive from Carcassonne and 1 hour 20 minutes from Toulouse. Car hire is essential. The residence is an hour’s drive from the Mediterranean and a 10-minute drive from Limoux, a famous wine area. Wine tours can be arranged. While the residence is relatively remote, there are supermarkets a short drive away and a visiting boulangerie, 3 nights a week, that sells fresh baguettes, croissants and pain au chocolat.

Accommodation Details

This 2-bedroom cottage is laid out over 3 floors. On the ground floor there is an open plan sitting room and kitchen, with doors to a private terrace and garden, with dining area. There is a bathroom with a large walk in shower, plus a vintage roll top bath. The large airy master bedroom is on the first floor, with a king-sized bed, double height ceilings and a juliette balcony. There is also a snug room with a double sofa bed, games, TV and DVD. On the third floor is a mezzanine twin/ double room.

Style Notes

The cottage is light and airy, painted white with a combination of modern style, French brocante finds and homemade wooden furniture, which the host also sells in their concept store barn. The essence on the building has been beautifully restored, with beamed ceilings in the master bedroom.

Will and I moved to France from London in 2005 after enjoyable careers in magazine publishing and travel. We bought and ran a successful chambres and table d'hotes for nine years, whilst growing our family from two to four along the way! In 2015 we sold our business and bought Domaine de Capiès where we continue to welcome people to this stunning corner of Southern France. Will enjoys creating the spaces, up cycling furniture and working with wood and I love cooking. We serve wood fired menu in our Barn Bar on Wednesdays and Saturdays. We have a 20m pool, play area with football goals, a basketball hoop, trampoline and little swing. We are hoping to build a tree house this summer, for everyone to enjoy.

Carcassonne, Southwest France

Castles, cobblestones and canals

This fairytale town in southern France is like a medieval pageant come to life, all drawbridges, cobblestones and Disney-esque turrets. Spaghetti-thin streets wind past basilicas covered in gargoyles and ramparts rolling out panoramic views. Watch falconry shows and knights on horseback or splash about at Carcassonne Plage, just outside the city.
