This pretty 1-bedroom cottage with a shared pool, 30 minutes outside Carcassonne is surrounded by beautiful French countryside with views of the vines and fields from the living room. There are plenty of perks for parents, including meals cooked on request on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and early meals for little ones on those days, and meal delivery at other times. Breakfast can be delivered on Sundays. The hosts can make reservations for local activities. There is a barn bar stocked with local wines, artisanal beers and soft drinks.

Why Kids Love it

The area is great for kids under the age of 12, with a shared 20m swimming pool, ping pong and pool tables in the barn and a shared play area with trampoline, swings and kids caravan hide out in one area. Family friendly movies are sometimes shown in the barn bar. There are tennis courts in the neighboring village. There are chateaux to visit nearby and the River Aude and 2 swimming lakes within a 40-minute drive. The canal du Midi is nearby - great for day trips on the canal boats - and there are nearby farms to visit.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights in July and August, ideally Saturday to Saturday. Please enquire if you would like a different length of stay as it may be accommodated. The residence is in a hectare of grounds shared with 3 rental cottages plus the owners’ home. This cottage is spread over 3 floors, with fairly steep stairs. Stair gates can be provided. Children must be supervised in the pool area. There is a free laundry service - just provide soap. A high chair, baby bath, toddler bed and travel cot can be provided on request. A wood-fired pizza night is available once a week (contact host for details and price) and on the first morning, guests receive a complimentary basket of french croissants, pain au chocolate, baguettes and homemade jam from the local boulangerie.

About the Location

The residence is in a quiet rural area with views of the countryside, surrounded by vineyards. It is a 30-minute drive from Carcassonne and 1 hour 20 minutes from Toulouse. Car hire is essential. The residence is an hour’s drive from the Mediterranean and a 10-minute drive from Limoux, a famous wine area. Wine tours can be arranged. While the residence is relatively remote, there are supermarkets a short drive away and a visiting boulangerie, 3 nights a week, that sells fresh baguettes, croissants and pain au chocolat. In cooler months it is easy to go skiing for the day at Aix-les-Thermes or Mont d’Olmes; the Pyrenees are an hour’s drive away.

Will and I moved to France from London in 2005 after enjoyable careers in magazine publishing and travel. We bought and ran a successful chambres and table d'hotes for nine years, whilst growing our family from two to four along the way! In 2015 we sold our business and bought Domaine de Capiès where we continue to welcome people to this stunning corner of Southern France. Will enjoys creating the spaces, up cycling furniture and working with wood. In 2016 we will open our Barn store, which will have a Capies 'deli' section, plus beautiful interior pieces to take home. We serve canapés on request and can arrange for wood fired pizzas to be delivered. Our young boys love to climb, ride their bikes and fish and would be very happy to impart some of their local secrets to any child happy to listen! We are hoping to build a tree house this summer, for everyone to enjoy.

We loved our stay in Tilly's place! Tilly and her family were really nice with us, we had a warm welcome, enjoyed their pizza and their recommendations. The location is perfect: quiet, relaxing and with great views.

Superb view from the two top floors and the swimming pool. Clean bathroom, clean linen sheets on the beds; kitchen lacked some equipment, although the basics were there. The hosts are very kind and helpful, and the domaine is pretty big, full of corners with nice surprises: hammocks, trampoline, etc. Lots of spices in the garden as well.

Carcassonne, Southwest France

Castles, cobblestones and canals

This fairytale town in southern France is like a medieval pageant come to life, all drawbridges, cobblestones and Disney-esque turrets. Spaghetti-thin streets wind past basilicas covered in gargoyles and ramparts rolling out panoramic views. Watch falconry shows and knights on horseback or splash about at Carcassonne Plage, just outside the city.
