Perks for the Parents

This 150-year-old Hudson Valley farmhouse, owned by a former interiors editor for magazines, is set on 16 acres of land backed by a mountain preserve. The area is a great place to explore with kids. It is just 10 minutes from Windham mountain, a fantastic ski resort for families. The great room is the heart of this beautiful house, and it has WiFi, an Apple TV, and a video projector to watch movies at night, as well as smaller TV with DVD player.

Why Kids Love it

There is something to enjoy here at every age - young children ride bikes, go hiking, play in the woods and go fishing, while older children and teens can ski in the winter. It’s a great place to play. The kids rooms include an attic bedroom, best for age 6+, and a fun guest cottage with camp beds for the summer months. Toys and children’s books are provided. Bring your own portable high chair and crib if necessary. There is space for a crib, and 2 junior beds are available.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. The house can sleep up to a maximum of 10 adults and 2 kids in the junior beds. The large loft bedroom sleeps 4 and is accessible by library ladder so is not suitable for small children. The loft is also above the great room, and is open with a half wall, so does not suit young kids if adults plan to stay up. One of the other guest rooms, with a full bed, is on the main floor and also off the great room, but has a large sliding barn door so the sound isn't as much of an issue. There may be a little poison ivy in the woods at the back of the property. Please note that for parties of 8 or more, there will be an additional $20 cleaning charge.

About the Location

The residence is in Acra, in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, around 130 miles north of midtown Manhattan. The town of Windham, 10 minutes away, has restaurants, a movie theater and antique shops. Hudson also has tons of restaurants and fantastic shops, and is just 25 minutes away across the river. Non-drivers can reach the area in 2 hours by Amtrak from Penn Station to Hudson, NY, which is 25 minutes across the rover (taxis are available, but a car is needed to get to grocery stores, restaurants, etc). Windham Mountain is fantastic ski resort for families with kids of all ages and is just 10 minutes from the property.

Accommodation Details

This 5-bedroom farmhouse has a master bedroom with queensize bed, 2 guest bedrooms with a queen and full bed, a loft bedroom with 2 twin beds and a queen bed and a kids room with a twin-over-full bunkbed (the top bunk would not fit an adult). Additional cots/ camp beds can be put in the smokehouse/guest cottage, which has no running water or heat. There a full bathroom with tub and a half bathroom. The house centers on a 700-sqft great room, and there is a smaller living room/study, mud room and kitchen. Outdoor space includes a large back field, an apple orchard and a large pergola with seating and dining area.

Style Notes

Owned by a former interiors editor for magazines, this light and bright 150-year-old farmhouse is filled with beautiful desirable homewares that they have accumulated over the years. It is light and open and unfussy, a place that all families can relax in and enjoy. We love the bedrooms in the eaves - slanted ceilings always look so intimate - and the vast open living space with a family dining table made for long leisurely meals. The residence is available for events and photo shoots (price on demand).

This house is nothing short of wonderful! We stayed with two other families with younger kids and everyone had plenty of space to do their own things. Very grateful for the small details like baby gates and a bazillion toys and books and plates and towels. When you walk through the yard, the wild thyme sets off the best scent too!

Stunning house and grounds, both stylish and comfortable and very kid friendly. We were 2 families including 4 adults, 3 very spirited 7 year old boys and a 15- month old. Indoor space was more than ample and we all slept very soundly. Kids loved exploring the wide open space. Owners were kind enough to allow us to pick some apples from their trees (delicious!). We hung out mostly outdoors, at the table or by the fire pit (a big hit with the kids) or hammock. Kieran couldn’t have been more helpful and responsive. Views must be even spectacular when leaves turn in the fall. We would LOVE to go back!!

We rented the home for a week with our boys aged 3 and 5. The house was super comfortable and hands-down the best stocked house I have ever rented (and we've rented quite a bit). Lots of thoughtful touches throughout. The kids were thrilled to be able to run around and explore freely. I was thrilled to have a beautiful, peaceful place to chill out and relax without my cell phone attached to me. The projector was a huge hit with the kids and we did evening movie time and smores in the fire pit almost every night! If you like farmhouse style, you will not be disappointed. The home is perfectly decorated and full of little nooks and crannies to read one of the many books in the house. Kieran is a gracious host. We are already planning a return.

This was our second stay at the Acra Residence and it was such a dream. The house is fully stocked to meet your needs and the needs of your kiddos. The hammock, outdoor space and fire pit are the highlights. We are already talking about making this an annual tradition.

Kieran's house and property were absolutely amazing!! We were two families with 6 kids ranging in ages from 2-11. The kids had plenty to keep busy, and the hammock was a favorite as well as the attic loft bedroom... Kitchen is well equipped for cooking, which we did for most of our meals. We hope to return someday!

A beautiful home that is perfect for a couple of families to stay. The provision of stair gates was very helpful given we had young kids not able to navigate stairs on their own. Our kids thoroughly enjoyed all the toys in the house. Our kids loving running all around and exploring the property!

We spent an incredible weekend at the Acra Residence with our 18-month old. After some unexpected snow that week it felt like we were in a winter wonderland - plus the skiing at nearby Windham was an unexpected bonus in March. Kieran was extremely attentive from the moment we booked and we'd feel very lucky to go back in the future. Their kitchen is very well equipped and we enjoyed great meals at the house. The great room with the projector was perfect for night time movie watching. We had everything we needed at our disposal!

We LOVE this house !! It is bright and airy, and cozy and beautiful. Everything in there is thoughtful in aesthetic and use. We had the perfect supplies to entertain kids, and entertain friends in the kitchen. Kieran was accommodating and helpful. We are dying to rent it again when its warm out and we can make more use of the property !

What a beautiful home and delightful place! Kieran was an excellent host - made everything extremely simple, welcoming. Even had a bottle of wine waiting for us! I wish we could have stayed longer. Very convenient to the grocery store and to Windham & Hunter Mountains. The wood stove was wonderful and the kitchen has everything you need to make cooking easy and enjoyable - a rarity in a rental. The house is immaculately designed and decorated and a pleasure to stay in. This is the best rental property I have ever stayed in! Thank you, Kieran!!!

This home and host are exceptional! We've now had two stays here in Kieran's home. The entire house is well-appointed, with a fantastic well-equipped kitchen where we cooked many a meal. The outside fire pit is a fun, marshmallow worthy treat for children and adults alike. The house is spacious and provides ample opportunity to break away and find a private nook. Our kids had great outdoor fun exploring the barn, chicken coop and the refurbished outdoor shed, which they promptly turned into a clubhouse. Kieran is highly responsive and a wonderful host!

I absolutely loved this house! We stayed for a weekend and everything was perfect. Kieran was available to answer all my questions and was so kind. The house decor was so nicely done and so cozy. We used the outside firepit which was a highlight and also did a lot of cooking in their beautiful and well equipped kitchen. I hope to make it back to this house again this year, I really loved it!

The Acra Residence was nothing short of spectacular. The property is incredible and we found it very relaxing to enjoy the hammock while our daughters frolicked across the acres of land. The multitude of toys in the house were a big hit with our 2 and 4 year old. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed and the layout of the house gave everyone - kids and adults - space. I look forward to finding a time to return!

WE absolutely loved this house! Worth making an excuse to travel to the area just to stay here. I could go on an on, but to be as brief as possible- the house was absolutely beautiful as were the grounds. All the beds were extremely comfortable, the living areas were perfect for our group to play in between events (we were in town for a friends wedding). The outdoors is amazing as well- we enjoyed exploring the flowery fields and running around to play outside. Everything is as as pictured, if not more beautiful. The host were wonderful and helpful making our stay absolutely perfect. Would love to return here someday!

I stayed at the Acra Residence with a group of 6 friends and we had the best possible time. The house could not have been more beautiful and provided the perfect backdrop for a relaxed summer weekend. The house had everything we could possibly need and Kieran, the owner, was quick and responsive for any questions we had. I can't recommend this property enough!

On arrival, the Acra residence was love at first sight. As you walk into this impeccable home your immediately set at ease and feel like you entered into a warm and cozy haven. Kieran has thought of everything. You can find Kieran in all the details of the home, Fresh flowers and beautiful smelling candles were left for us, along with a bottle of wine and snacks for the kids! The house is well appointed, perfectly organized, easy to find things. The children loved all the basket of toys she had around the house. We all had a wonderful time and slept comfortable in the house. The house is very quiet and peaceful surrounded by acres and acres of beautiful property. Its the perfect home for all seasons. We had a wonderful time in near by Hudson Ny, with many restaurants and shopping. This home is a top notch and true gem, I would love to come back and stay again as we really enjoyed it. Thank you for making our stay feel so comfortable, we truly had a wonderful time.

Kieran is a perfect host - her home is stunningly beautiful, in a great location, and stocked with toys galore! We spent a weekend in November - our boys were in heaven romping outside in the fields and swinging in the hammock. They loved the children's bedroom and baskets of toys placed all over the house. The projection screen was a huge hit. We could have a a glass of wine in the great room and enjoy the fire while the kids played or watched a movie. The layout is fantastic - you can see the children playing outside from the living room, and can watch them play from one end of the house to another while cooking dinner. Great for young kids. The bedrooms are spacious with beautiful linens and so comfortable. All we had to bring was ourselves, the house is very well equipped. She really thought of every detail, and put out fresh flowers, towels and wine for us tired parents (yay!). Loved our stay and would be thrilled to visit again.

Catskills, Hudson Valley

The woods are lovely…

It’s no surprise that artists, musicians and writers have fallen for the Catskills. Around two hours north of New York City, this refuge from urban life is all mountains, deep forests and pretty historical towns, and is the ideal place to introduce your kids to the great outdoors. Start them young at organic farms with tractor rides, corn mazes and fruit to pick, then graduate on to forest walks, tubing, spotting bald eagles from mountain railroads and petting goats in animal sanctuaries. Skiing on Hunter Mountain, horseback riding and splashing at Zoom Flume water park are just a few of the area’s top attractions for families.
