Perks for the Parents

This pretty countryside cottage is ideal for a family stay in the Catskills, close to farms, rivers and lakes. It has been in the owner’s family for over 50 years. Recently renovated, it has plenty for a family including cribs, a well equipped kitchen and a barbecue pit. The house is set in gardens with plenty of space for kids to roam; there is a pond with koi carp and plenty of wildlife around to spot. Nearby towns offer antique stores. The house also has a fire pit, fishing poles, a canoe, a washer/dryer and a dishwasher. There are mushrooms in the grounds and handy books on mushroom picking in the house.

Why Kids Love it

The house has plenty of toys, books, DVDs and games for kids. It comes with a crib, high chair, jogging stroller, stair gates (if needed) and a pack’n’play. The property has plenty of room to run and explore with frogs, toads and salamanders galore plus endless bugs to hunt. Villa Roma resort nearby offers lots of family fun including horseback riding, river rafting and swimming pools. There are nearby farms for fresh eggs and milk and to take the kids to visit the animals. A kids splash pool, outdoor toys, a basketball hoop and a volleyball net plus ball are included along with an Xbox 360 by request.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights over Memorial Day and July 4 weekends, and from 1st July to 7th September, 2 nights at all other times. The house is off the road but has very little traffic; all the property is behind the house away from the road but small children may need supervision, especially in the gardens where there are unfenced ponds. Well behaved pets welcome on request. There is a Smart TV in the main living area with Netflix and Amazon Prime. The kitchen comes with a Mickey Mouse pancake maker, cotton candy maker, pizza stone, cake pop maker, food processor, blender, microwave and a lot of other baking and cooking amenities.

About the Location

The residence is nestled in the hills of Livingston Manor, between Jeffersonville and White Sulphur Springs just west of the Catskill mountains. It is 20 minutes from Callicoon and Jeffersonville and 30 minutes from Monticello. The closest bus station is in Liberty; the closest airport is Albany International Airport, 2.5 hours away. New York City is just over 2 hours’ drive away. Car rental recommended; there is plenty of parking for 3 or more cars. There are nearby rivers for rafting and lakes for fishing and swimming.

The main living space is open plan with a living room, kitchen and dining room, leading to a deck with barbecue pit and outdoor dining. The bedrooms include 2 bedrooms with queen beds and a third with 2 twin beds and a toddler bed/crib (optional). A queen air bed can be added. All bedrooms have window a/c units. The bathroom has a bathtub. There is a second bathroom in the unrenovated basement.

Style Notes

Shabby chic. This comfortable, cozy house was recently renovated and has collectibles and antiques throughout. Each room has a different kind of music player: one has record player, another has cds and the other has a tape deck. The main dining area has an antique radio. The main rooms have large windows to capture all the views and there are clean, warm colors throughout. The gardens include fresh mint, apple and plum trees. We love the outdoor space and setting for a traditional countryside adventure as a family.

The family and I loved this house and its gorgeous lake. The host was very communicative and friendly and the home welcoming. Our son loved all the toys. The area was great.

We had a great stay at the Menges Residence! We live in the city and loved having a few days to get away and relax in nature. Nicole provided a high chair and pack n' play, which made packing so much easier for us. She was also easy to communicate with and always answered our questions in a timely manner. This was our first time using Kid & Coe and it was so great to stay in a place that already had blackout curtains, toys, books, etc. We loved exploring the backyard with our dog and 7mo old baby.

We had a relaxing stay at the Menges Residence. The house is homely, and well stocked with kids toys, and equipment. The house is in a peaceful area and we enjoyed exploring the wooded area behind the house. Check in and out were a breeze and Nicole was very easy to contact.

Catskills, Hudson Valley

The woods are lovely…

It’s no surprise that artists, musicians and writers have fallen for the Catskills. Around two hours north of New York City, this refuge from urban life is all mountains, deep forests and pretty historical towns, and is the ideal place to introduce your kids to the great outdoors. Start them young at organic farms with tractor rides, corn mazes and fruit to pick, then graduate on to forest walks, tubing, spotting bald eagles from mountain railroads and petting goats in animal sanctuaries. Skiing on Hunter Mountain, horseback riding and splashing at Zoom Flume water park are just a few of the area’s top attractions for families.
