Perks for the Parents

This guesthouse, sleeping up to 7, is hidden behind a big red barn on 100 wooded acres and is available outside peak season. Close to a family-friendly town and completely surrounded by nature, it provides plenty of family entertainment, from mountain skiing adventures to local bike routes and summer theater. The property can be booked alongside the main farmhouse for a larger group, sleeping up to 13, or on its own. In the summer, the 2 properties are only booked together; after Labor Day the main house may be rented to other guests.

Why Kids Love it

Kids will love the outdoor space, as well as the nearby farms, museums and theaters. There are 3 kid-friendly ski areas a short drive away. Meet the neighborhood farm animals, go on nature walks right on the property, and visit the annual county fair for local flavor. The house has board games and age-appropriate sports equipment can be borrowed from the main house. Pack'n'plays and booster seats are available for young children.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. The property is set over 2 floors and does not have a stair gate. Kids will need supervision on the property, which has a stream, pond (a long hike from the house and not easy to stumble on) and swimming pool in a fenced-in yard. The guesthouse may be rented separately from the main farmhouse and is situated so that you do not need to interact with the family in the main house if they are home. The house has a blue stone patio and gas grill right outside the door. There are multiple grocery store options 3 miles from the house, and there is the option of a food co-op that sources local and organic foods, local brewery, cheese shop, toy store, book shop movie theater and more.

About the Location

Located in the family-friendly city of Chatham, this property is across the street from a farm with cows, pigs and chickens, and near the NY Firehouse Museum, Mass MoCA, OMI Arts center, and Catamount, Jiminy Peak and Butternut Creek ski areas. There are lots of farms nearby - favorites include Kinderhook Farm, Little Ghent Farm, Old Chatham Sheepherders and Buttonwood Hallow (directly across the street). There are local playgrounds and tennis courts, a local summer theater, movie theater, local brewery, bookstore and cheese shop. You can get to Chatham by car, train (via Hudson, NY) or by flying into Albany International airport, 45 minutes away. Car rental is essential.

Accommodation Details

The fully-contained guest house has 2 bedrooms and a bathroom with shower. The upstairs loft has a kingsize bed, the living room has 1 sofa bed that pulls out to a queensize bed, and the second bedroom has 2 twins and a trundle bed. There is a full kitchen and a washer-dryer. It also has a living room open with a small table.

Style Notes

Comfortable countryside. This cozy guesthouse includes a soft sectional sofa, wooden floors, white walls and views of countryside scenes. Set in a verdant spot next to a stream and fields and across the road from a local farm, the guesthouse is a lovely spot for a family trip. We love the location and easy family style.

Culture and countryside adventures

In the beautiful setting of Columbia County, Chatham is a pretty town with plenty to keep a family occupied for a week or more. Take to the trees at Catamount Ski Area for aerial adventures - or skiing in season; visit local farms and meet the animals; hike or cycle local routes or take in some culture in the many and varied performance spaces and theaters of the town. There’s an annual county fair too, plenty of distilleries, wineries and breweries to visit, and state parks to explore a short drive away.
