Perks for the Parents

This exceptional architect-designed luxury retreat with pool, sleeping up to 8, has been featured in Architectural Digest and is a stunning way to experience Northern Thailand with kids. Half an hour from cosmopolitan Chiang Mai, it nestles in the foothills of the Himalayas and is surrounded by local villages, water buffalo and rivers. The residence itself is beautifully designed, fully staffed and has generous hosts ready to make your stay really special. Set up with 2 separate pavilions, a 1-bedroom and a 3-bedroom pavilion, it suits larger family groups and can also be booked for smaller groups with reduced rates. Rates include all meals. Visit local villages, traverse gentle river rapids, ride elephants, visit temples, play golf and relax in spas.

Why Kids Love it

There is a luxury infinity edged swimming pool beside the main house and intriguing details, including a kraken sculpture, throughout the grounds. A pond is filled with koi carp. The family suite is set up with a twin bedroom, ideal for kids. Family-friendly treats nearby include elephant riding, gentle river rafting and a monkey center. The hosts offer a guide to accompany you on all trips outside the residence, and can arrange kid-friendly trips including strawberry picking, crocodile farms and monkey center visits. No toys, books and games provided for kids; children’s cooking classes are available. Young children will need supervision around the ponds and pools at this property.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. Rates include: all meals (Continental breakfast plus Thai lunch and dinner and tropical fruit), laundry, airport transfers, fast WiFi, mini bar, guides for all trips outside the property and concierge service. Children under 13 stay for free. The Chiang Mai Residence is only rented to 1 family/group at a time and not to separate, unrelated parties, for maximum privacy and use of the property. Rates are based upon occupancy of rooms and number of guests. Rates listed are for 4 guests; for 8 guests the price is $3,157 per night, for 2 guests it is $1,005 per night and for 6 guests it is $2,440 per night. Each bedroom is considered 2 person occupancy. An additional single bed may be added to a room for a young child for an additional fee of the equivalent of 5000 THB. Please do not hesitate to contact the host with an inquiry about rates for your booking.

About the Location

The Chiang Mai Residence is in a great location, only 30 minutes by car to Old Chiang Mai. Old Chiang Mai, built over 700 years ago, is surrounded by a moat and the 4 original gates into the old city still exist. We love the history still alive here, the many beautiful Wats to visit, and if you're in for a fun water filled adventure, get the whole family super soakers and visit during the Thai New Year called Songkran. It is 40 minutes’ drive from Chiang Mai airport - please contact the host for details on transfers and trips in the local area.

Accommodation Details

This residence comprises 7 separate pavilions with a main house, dining room, Teak Pavilion with a kingsize bedroom and a Family Suite, with 3 air conditioned bedrooms. These 3 bedrooms are made up as 2 double bedrooms and 1 twin bedroom. The pavilions are close to each other but with privacy - the Teak Pavilion and Family Suite are both 50m from the main house. The bathrooms are unique: the main house has a tropical shower and whirlpool in a private outdoor space plus semi-outdoor showers. The Family Suite's bathroom has a shower.

Style Notes

The residence was designed by the noted American architect Bill Bensley and is a Royal Thai Lanna style gated private villa. Details include vaulted 8m high golden teak ceilings, sumptuous silk furnishings and museum quality antiques. It is set in 5 acres of landscaped gardens and water gardens, with a pond filled with koi. We love the views of the green foothills of the Himalayas, water gardens and palm trees, the kraken sculpture emerging from the lush greenery and the beautiful terraces for outdoor dining and relaxing.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

The Rose of the North

The beautiful mountain city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand offers a relaxed vibe and uber-friendly locals. It’s an easy city to get around with kiddos in tow, whether biking, walking or adventuring on tuk-tuks. Brimming with fresh markets, family-friendly cooking schools and ancient temples, the city also offers river cruises on scorpion-tailed boats to nearby villages for a dose of local color, and day trips to visit hill tribes. Beyond the city are the lush hillsides and gorgeous valleys of the Himalayan foothills.

Absolutely fabulous property with amazing pool and beautiful surroundings! Howie is a fantastic host and easy communicator who organized everything from A to Z, adapting all to our specific needs. Jerri posseses the most extra-ordinary cooking skills! Her love for food is tasted in every dish that comes out of that kitchen! We had an unforgettable stay at Howie's Homestay, we just came back and it was the hardest back to school Monday for our 4 kids ever!
