Perks for the Parents

This historic family home in Oak Park, half an hour outside Chicago, features a basement play room and a kid-friendly backyard. It sleeps 6 + 1. This family-friendly neighborhood is the perfect spot for architecture fans - Oak Park is the home of Ernest Hemingway and Frank Lloyd Wright, ripe with beautiful early-mid 20th Century design. The house retains the mid-century charm with beautiful dark wood and hardwood floors throughout, together with all the benefits of a recent full-scale renovation, such as a fabulous modern kitchen. The parents’ bedroom even has an attached balcony so you can relax with a great view after the kids have gone to sleep at night. This residence is a short drive into Chicago, so you can spend your days sightseeing in the city before you return to this calm and spacious home to relax.

Why Kids Love it

This is a great family home filled with toys for kids aged 4 -8, including a pack-and-play. Kids love the great backyard, especially the full-sized basketball hoop and concrete pad. The whole family will enjoy the full, carpeted basement - perfect for play time on rainy days with its foosball table, gymnastics rings, and monkey bars. The house is just a few steps away from the local elementary school, with two fabulous playgrounds and a baseball field, and there’s a public swimming pool at Rehm Park (15 minutes’ walk). When you’re ready to explore, the city of Chicago has some fantastic family attractions: visit the water-front green parks, the Shedd aquarium, the Adler planetarium, or the Chicago Children’s Museum.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 1 week. Safety notes: there are 2 sets of stairs without stair gates so young children should be supervised indoors. (Ask the hosts if you’d like them to arrange stair gates during your stay). The large backyard is fully fenced in with a gate at the front and back. The hosts may be able to arrange parking in the detached garage but there is plenty of street parking available. There is a fold up, full-sized treadmill in one of the guest rooms that guests are welcome to use (or fold up for extra space). The house comes with air conditioning, bikes (2 adult; 1 kid (16"), 1 balance bike, and a scooter) to borrow, a dishwasher, washer/dryer, TV, and WiFi.

About the Location

This Oak Park home is perfect whether you’re visiting the local village or venturing to Chicago (around half an hour’s drive). Oak Park is the town bordering Chicago on the west and is just a 20-minute drive south of O’Hare International Airport. It’s easy to drive or get around on foot, with the Blue Line El subway stop just a 10-minute walk away (for access to downtown Chicago and the airport) and there’s lots more within walking distance: 3 great parks, the neighborhood pool, 2 grocery stores, a bakery, ice cream shop, and much more. Oak Park’s parks and playgrounds are fabulous and you’ll never be more than 5 minutes away from one.

On the ground floor level, there’s a cozy living room with a working fireplace, separate dining room, and fully-equipped kitchen with a built-in dining bench. There is also an office with a desk with windows overlooking the backyard. All bedrooms are upstairs. The primary guest room has a kingsize bed, ensuite bathroom, and an attached balcony. A guest bedroom has a queen bed, treadmill and the children’s bedroom has 2 single beds. An additional bedroom is currently being used as a 2nd office with a desk. There is 1 air bed and 1 travel crib available on request. Outside, there’s a large backyard with cherry and plum trees, a basketball hoop, a concrete pad and a couch, table and chairs in the summer.

Style Notes

Mid-century modern. This 100-year-old home has been fully upgraded to include a state-of-the-art kitchen, balcony off the primary bedroom, and many more touches, together with beautifully-restored woodwork and unique character. There’s lots of space for everyone in the family to spread out and play, read, and work separately, while coming together at the built-in kitchen table, large dining room table, or in the large backyard space. We love the exposed wooden ceiling beams in the living room, the contemporary brickwork tiles in the bathroom, and the warming blend of patterned textiles which complement the natural dark wood around the house.
