Perks for the Parents

This custom-built barn in Copake Lake, NY features views of the Taconic mountain range and 10 acres of land to explore. It sleeps 9 + 1. Hunker down in this cozy country residence, which is a great house for family entertaining and at-home dining whatever the weather - the kitchen has high-end appliances including Bosch, Wolf and a gas range with 8 burners to prepare gourmet meals. If you’re keen to explore the great outdoors, there’s easy access to Catamount ski slopes for winter, as well as spectacular lakes and beautiful parks for summer. When the sun’s out, take the kids to Copake Lake for a classic beach day filled with lake swimming, boating and scenic picnic spots.

Why Kids Love it

The house has plenty of toys and books for children under 10. It’s a great family space, with a very large living room and 2 kids rooms to enjoy - they can choose from a tent-style bed or the other room with a house-shaped bed. They’ll love playing out on the playground in the garden by day, or toasting smores out on the firepit before bedtime. On the lower level, there’s a ping pong table and a TV room for chill out days. In the winter, kids can try ice skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ice-fishing at Copake Lake (weather permitting), as well as skiing, snowboarding and tubing at nearby Catamount or Butternut.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days. Safety notes: kids will find the stairs easy down to the lower level and there are stair gates if needed for younger children. A travel crib can also be provided on request. The hosts have bikes (for adults and kids) as well as children’s scooters for guests to borrow. Car rental is essential in this area. It’s around 2.5 hours away from New York’s international airports.

About the Location

The residence is located between Copake Lake and Copake Falls in upstate New York, an area known for amazing lakes, nature trails, bird-watching and picturesque hiking. It’s less than 5 minutes’ drive into Copake for access to a general store, eateries and a town park with a skate park and baseball fields. It’s 10 minutes’ drive to Bash Bish Falls State park, where you’ll find hiking trails, picnic areas and a scenic waterfall. It’s a great location for exploring the wider rural area: visit Millerton, Great Barrington, Butternut, the Berkshires, Salisbury, Art Omi or Hudson (all within 15-30 minutes’ drive). Catamount Ski Area (15 minutes away) is great for skiing and it has the longest zipline in the US!

Accommodation Details

The house has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. The main floor has a barn-style open living space, leading to a family dining area and a full kitchen. The spacious screened porch off the kitchen is the perfect all-season entertainment/dining area to enjoy the idyllic surroundings. The primary bedroom is also on this floor, with a kingsize bed and separate bathroom (with a shower and soaking tub). On the lower level, there is a family bathroom (with a shower and bathtub for kids), as well as 2 kids bedrooms, each with 1 single bed, 1 of which also has a single trundle in a tent to sleep another guest. This floor is also home to a guest bedroom with 2 queensize beds, a private bathroom and private access to the backyard. The entrance to the house is via the mudroom which is located on the lower level.

Style Notes

Modern barn. This loft-style home makes the most of that spectacular scenery - giant windows overlook the mountains in the living area, framed by super high ceilings and original wooden structural beams. Every room is professionally decorated by interior designer AdD to create a bright, playful and contemporary space. We love the 50-inch moon light on top of the fireplace which creates a magical atmosphere, the emerald green sofa in the main living space and the subtle industrial touches which add a modern take on the classic barn style.

Lakeside lodges and outdoor fun

This desirable location, about 2.5 hours north of New York City, is a haven for families, close to ski slopes in winter and with watersports on its local lakes aplenty in the summer. The houses here are beautiful, with large gardens, and the local towns and villages have unique independent shops, farmers markets and family-run cafes. If you like golf, there are plenty of nearby courses, not to mention fun mini golf courses for kids.
