This quiet, comfortable whitewashed cottage in the lee of the Dartry Mountains in County Leitrim sleeps up to 5 and is the perfect away-from-it-all retreat. Located on Truskmore overlooking the picturesque Glenade Valley, it is surrounded by an acre of land and is a world away from busy city life. The nearest village is 10 minutes away by car, and the coast is 15 minutes away. Best of all, the Eagles Rock Trail starts 300m from the cottage, so you can hike to the top of nearby mountains and enjoy views of Donegal Bay. Warm up after your adventures around the cozy woodburning stove.

What we love

  • It’s rustic and rural and a real break from modern life and distractions (= more time to devote to playing and bonding together as a family)
  • There are great opportunities for adventure and activity nearby: climbing, mountain walking, cycling country lanes and surfing (in very thick wetsuits)
  • The kitchen is hand built with a breakfast bar and all mod cons, including washing machine and dishwasher
  • The living room is a cozy relaxing space after outdoor adventuring, with a woodburning stove, TV and sofas
  • There are two double bedrooms, and a crib can be added to the master bedroom, which also has an ensuite shower
  • On a sunny day, you can drink coffee from the espresso machine outside at the bench and table and admire the views
  • There are lots of books and guides to borrow
  • The residence is 300m from the Eagles Rock hiking trail, which leads up nearby mountains for views of Donegal Bay

Things to know

  • Belfast airport is 2 hours away and Dublin airport is just under 3 hours away by car
  • The closest village is Kinlough, 10 minutes by car
  • It’s 15 minutes to the coast, 25 minutes to Sligo, 30 minutes to Donegal and an hour to Enniskillen
  • There is no internet access at the residence and the phoneline is for emergencies only
  • It’s an eco-friendly spot, and rainwater is harvested and filtered for use
  • There are some hazards in the terrain around the property for small toddlers - streams, rocks and bogs - so they need to be kept under close supervision
  • A crib can be provided on request; there is also a sofa bed in the lounge which can be used in addition
  • The main bathroom has a bath; the ensuite bathroom has a shower

We are a family of five, parents to three adventurous and active young boys. We love to travel and see new locations as a local sees them, always preferring to stay in residential locations. We are happy for like minded families to stay at our cottage and can provide numerous details to make your trip a great one.

While living in Ireland for 6 months, our family of 4 has been so keen to see as much of Ireland as possible while we are here. The Eagles Rock, County Leitrim trip is going to stand out as one of our absolute favorites. The morning after we arrived, we were greeted by sheep grazing in every direction. We walked just minutes outside of the cozy home and began our trek up to the top of Eagles Rock. Both my 10 year old and my 4 almost 5 year old made it all the way up, stopping along the way to observe the sheep and the absolutely gorgeous views. Christine shared so many great spots to explore and the following day we did just that. It was very helpful to have an insider tell us exactly where to go when on a tight traveling timeline. My boys didn't want to leave the books or games or the sheep! I didn't want to leave the bathtub and my husband didn't want to leave the fireplace reading nook. We absolutely highly recommend this complete get away from city living to imagine for a short time what it would be like to be a local.
