There is a chef’s kitchen for cooking with the family and a cedar hot tub plus outdoor shower for relaxation, and gym equipment, including a rowing machine and pilates reformer in a designated work out porch. An office area has an Apple desktop workstation with wireless printing.

Why Kids Love it

With a trampoline, craft room and large garden with chickens, the house is great for kids. There is a bedroom with bunkbeds and another with a twin bed, making it easy at bedtime. The big family bath tub is perfect for bathing and cleaning up at night. Nearby, kids can cycle on a flat dirt road, explore coastal redwoods, U-pick at organic farms and play at the beach. The residence’s outdoor acreage makes playing outside fun. Children’s books, toys and games are provided along with a high chair, swing and Pack’n’Play.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 days. An additional fee of $40 per person is charged if more than 10 guests are present. There are stairs in the property with a stair gate. Younger children may need to be watched on the deck, which has steps down to the garden, and around the hot tub. The large garden is enclosed with a low wall and fence. A travel crib, double air bed and single air bed can be added. During pumpkin season you can go to the local pumpkin farms; at Christmas you can visit the tree farms to pick out your perfect tree.

Style Notes

Rustic and comfortable. This barn-like home has wooden countertops and Amish baseboard trim, a farmhouse dining table and great welcoming rooms. Alongside the rustic style, modern conveniences are interwoven, including the professional Viking range in the kitchen, an Italian pizza oven and more. We love the large Carmel Stone fireplace, the thoughtful boot/mud room for shoes and outdoor gear, and piano and instruments for a family gathering with music included.

Our family put down roots on the most beautiful protected stretch of coast we call the SLOWCOAST. 50 miles of protected coastline from Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz. Our home is in a coastal redwood canyon 5 minutes from the beach. We build our home from reclaimed doug fir timber from a warehouse in Stockton. We have chickens, gardens, a creek with coho salmon and steelhead, bobcats, mountain lions, wild turkeys and many other wildlife to observe. We love organic farms, cooking, beach combing and hanging out at home with friends.

We had an amazing time at The Swanton Residence. The house is beautiful and the surroundings are worthy of exploration. We had three families and five kids, and they absolutely loved hunting for banana slugs, going on hikes, building a bonfire and making s'mores. We can't wait to go back.

Davenport, Santa Cruz County

Vineyards, beaches and a mellow pace

Along California’s coastal Highway 1, south of Half Moon Bay and north of Santa Cruz, Davenport is in the heart of the so-called Slow Coast. Join photographers snapping wild coastlines and dramatic rock formations on the local beaches. Don’t miss local vineyards, Shark Fin Cove (which has a rock in the shape of a shark’s fin protruding from the sand) and the mellow pace of life in these parts.
