Perks for the Parents

The space is ideal for a family with a spacious kitchen and dining room that seats 8 comfortably. The kids bunk room, with plenty of space for an additional travel cot as well as lots of toys, is conveniently located on the ground floor, while the master bedroom upstairs is a peaceful sanctuary with the adjoining sun-room. There is also a single room, ideal for a nanny or in-law. The top floor is an ideal room for a whole family with a double and 2 singles.

Why Kids Love it

The house is right on the beach so couldn't be more ideal for kids to spend all day playing, while you relax for a long bbq lunch in the front garden. There are plenty of toys, books and a craft cupboard for a rainy day. For older children the house is close to golf, tennis, riding and sailing clubs. The sitting room is a cosy nook in which to enjoy a family DVD in front of a wood-burning stove after sunset.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. The host does not accept Saturday arrivals - weekend stays from Friday or Sunday only. The owners have no pets but are happy to accept them as guests. There are no stair gates, but you can easily close off the stairs with doors, both upstairs and downstairs. There is a sauna, which guests are welcome to use, but at their own risk - it is small (no more than 3 people) and the stove is open. Car hire not essential: the property is walking distance from the village with a post office, butcher and general store. Note that the beach is a pebbly beach, and there are few items for babies.

About the Location

The cottage is in Kingsdown, near Deal, an hour and half’s drive from east London, or 2 hours from central London. It is accessible by high speed train (1 hour 10 minutes from St Pancras or Stratford), and is a 5-minute taxi ride from Walmer Station. The cottage is next to a pub which serves great food, with 2 other pubs within walking distance. The hosts have a number of bikes including 1 with a child back seat, and the beach promenade is ideal for cycling to the nearby town of Deal.

Accommodation Details

This cottage has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The ground floor has a large open-plan kitchen, dining room, and sitting room with wood-burning stove. There is also a shower room and bunk bed room. Doors that open out to the front garden that leads straight to the beach. Upstairs is the master bedroom and single room plus a sunroom with sea views. A double and 2 single beds are found in the attic. There is an outdoor sauna in the back garden.

Style Notes

This is the last cottage in a row of cute fisherman cottages, right on the beach. The house is a bright and light space, that plays to its nautical location in terms of style. It has a strong personality with large metal windows, bold colours and wood panelling throughout. We love the cozy open plan design on the ground floor and the serene sunroom upstairs, with sea views, along with the vintage touches and nautical pictures.

My wife is a magazine journalist and editor who gets her kicks from uncovering the best a city has to offer. I've been in finance .. and feeling a little unfulfilled .. now exploring new ventures. I was brought up in the countryside and whilst loving the buzz of a city am equally happy to get away from it all. Together we live a life that takes in the best of both worlds and are bringing up our children (aged 6, 4 and a baby) to appreciate the vibrancy of London life while being able to entertain themselves all day on the beaches of the East Kent coast or at the Villa in Marrakesh. We're both keen travellers and believe that with a bit of thought, preparation and the right attitude, children should encourage, rather than stop you from doing anything or going anywhere you want to go.

Fishing history and the wind in your hair

Just over an hour east of London by high speed rail, Deal is one of the UK’s classic seaside towns. It’s got an air of history, rows of fishermen’s cottages and candy-colored beach huts on the pebbly beach. Take tea in the café at the end of the pier, explore the town’s fabulous castles or take scooters and speed along the promenade, wind in your hair.

We had a lovely stay at the Victory Residence! The location is pretty unbeatable. We loved being right on the water. We also managed well without a car, able to walk or take a bus to everything we wanted to do in Kingdown, Walmer, and Deal. The house is also incredibly cool in terms of decor and the different kinds of spaces. It had lots to entertain the kids on rainy afternoons: books, toys, TV. Check-in and check-out were straightforward. We hope to return someday!

Really lovely house and location. The sun deck is especially dreamy. The beach, being pebbly, is meditative and not too crowded. The Zetland Arms next door is great for a drink, shame the food there not too good. For a terrific meal try The Rose (a nice straight walk along the sea front to Deal). Some great antiques and jewellers there, too.

We had a wonderful stay at The Victory Residence - the house was great, well equipped, clean and comfortable. The location was perfect for what we were looking for and Chris was very quick to respond to queries. I have recommended this property to friends and would love to come again.

The Victory Residence was perfect for our multi-generational family (Mom, Dad, kids, Granny, Aunts, Uncles) travelling together for a seaside getaway over the summer. We had a blast even though it rained. The toys on-site and layout of the house was clutch - with breathtaking views and sunset drinks overlooking the water. The pub next door even made us dinner one night to takeaway at the house while the kids slept upstairs. Can't wait to book again for next summer.

Loved everything about our stay here! The location is so good right at the beach (in one of the quaintest villages), the owners were incredibly helpful and the house is just one of my favorite homes I've ever been in. It's perfectly decorated, so hip and cool and just has a lovely vibe to it. We could have easily stayed another week! Or years... Excited to come back to visit next time I'm in England.

We went to The Victory Residence for my birthday weekend and we had a wonderful time. The house is beautifully decorated, with carefully considered design touches nodding to the house's maritime feel and seaside location, a delicious sunroom in the main bedroom (in which we whiled away precious hours in the warmth, while our toddler napped), a spacious open plan kitchen / dining / living space, where we cooked and danced (thanks to the record player provided), while watching our boy run in and out of the house and spacious garden. The location is superb, practically next door to a lovely local pub (where you can enjoy a tipple right by the water, watching the sun go down), near the village of Walmer (with a lovely local butcher/deli, selling delicious treats for supper) and a 10 min drive from Deal, where we enjoyed exploring vintage shops and a vintage Saturday market. Alex, the homeowner was incredibly helpful, providing directions, local information and being available on the phone, if any last minute info was needed. A quick 1h20 drive from London, The Victory Residence really was a pleasure to discover and stay in! We look forward to visiting again soon.
