Perks for the Parents

A historic cottage in the popular village of Croyde in Devon, within walking distance of the sandy beach at Croyde Bay and close to heaps of family-friendly restaurants. It sleeps 8 (4 adults + 4 kids). The location is perfect for families: in Croyde village you’ll find plenty to do just a short stroll away, including quaint tea rooms, pubs with play areas, fun buzzy restaurants, an ice-cream parlor, takeaway pizzas and different street food vans cropping up around the area during the summer months. Parents can retreat to the luxurious primary suite an soak in the freestanding bathtub or in the hot tub in the backyard to relax after exhilarating days spent surfing on the beach.

Why Kids Love it

Kids of all ages will love the fun bunk room and nautical-themed styling. Older kids can also enjoy the hot tub (with supervision). Croyde village has a cute kids playground and beach volleyball court (just a few minutes away on foot) and they’ll love visiting the village ice cream parlor and The Hub local store, which has kids toys and souvenirs. The big draw here is the beach: Croyde Bay is a huge sandy cove lined with hilly natural sand dunes (perfect for kids to scramble up and slide down) and edged with rocks on the south end for rock-pooling. You can take surfing lessons on the waves from various surf schools nearby (for both kids or adults, with board hire available) or just grab a boogie board and wetsuit from the surf stores in the village.

Things to Know

The washing machine and tumble dryer is located in an exterior building, together with an outdoor shower. A crib and highchair are available on request. Parking for 2 cars is available but car hire is not essential once you are in the village. A security deposit of £1000 is to be paid directly to the owners 2 months prior to arrival (returned no later than 3 weeks after departure). Check in: 5pm. Check out: 10am. Two small-medium dogs may be allowed on request - please check when booking. On acceptance, an additional fee of £75 per dog will need to be paid directly to the owner. Dogs are not allowed on furniture. There is an additional charge of £150 for use of the hot tub.

About the Location

The house is in the center of historic Croyde, a narrow winding country village in Devon lined with thatched roof cottages and green fields. The village comes alive in the warmer months and you’ll find surf shops, grocery stores, pubs and restaurants nearby, as well as a craft market at weekends in summer. The beach is accessible via footpaths from the village (15 minutes’ walk) which leads you to sandy paths behind the dunes of Croyde Bay (hilly for toddlers!) It’s a short drive to historic Georgeham (although parking and driving in the narrow streets can be tricky during Summer) and there are more sandy beaches to explore for days out by car at nearby Saunton Sands, Pulborough and Woolacombe. The nearest large town is Braunton (10 minutes’ drive) for supermarkets, a library, coffee shops and links to the cycle-and-walk-friendly Tarka trail.

Accommodation Details

The house has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, set over 3 floors. On the ground floor is the main living space: a lounge area with a cozy corner sofa and wood burner, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen and dining area, plus a studio with a desk and sofa. Upstairs, on the first floor is the first of the double bedrooms as well as 2 of the family bathrooms. This floor also houses the primary double bedroom which boasts an en-suite bathroom, as well as a bunk room for up to 4 kids. On the third floor is the final double bedroom and a family bathroom with a walk-in shower and freestanding tub. Outside, the terrace makes the perfect spot for al fresco dining from the Egg barbecue or pizza oven.

Style Notes

Beach in reach. The hosts have chosen playful nautical styling to reflect the beautiful coastal surroundings of Croyde. Blue-and-white striped textiles frame a neutral white palette, dotted with sea-blue accessories and driftwood furnishings. The bedrooms have a sophisticated and elegant feel with subtle pastel colors, and the luxurious bathrooms are finished with marble stone and gorgeous standalone bathtubs. We love the cozy bench-seated dining table for family meals, the custom built bunk beds and the colorful bathroom in the eaves.

Devon, England

Cream teas, surf beaches and big cats

Down in the southwest of England, the weather is a touch warmer, the beaches are sandy and the ice creams are homemade and delicious. At any time of year there’s something to do in Devon as a family, from blustery walks to local pubs to sandcastle building, surfing lessons and days at the beach. The north of the county is known for its surf culture while the south is popular with the sailing fraternity. All across the county there are great options for family treats, from zoos to safaris on Exmoor, spotting red deer and - if you’re really lucky - the legendary big cats that are said to prowl the moorlands.
