Perks for the Parents

This is a restored 16th century farmhouse with wooden beams, huge fireplaces, 5 bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, and a new private, heated saltwater pool in an idyllic country setting. It sleeps up to 10. You can also rent the sister cottage of Le Mazet (1 double bedroom) which brings the sleep count up to 13. The center of the house is the wood-beamed, terracotta-floored kitchen with a table where everyone can eat great food together. The garden is private and there are no close neighbors, except the hosts who live in the grounds and are on hand to offer concierge services to book restaurants, bikes rentals, Pilates or yoga sessions and wine tasting if you wish. A private chef to cook your meals and clear up too can be arranged. A baker delivers fresh baguettes and croissants in the morning.

Why Kids Love it

Le Mas is a paradise for children of all ages. There are lots of toys, games, books , DVDs, outdoor games and the private, heated pool with safety cover. Outdoor games include soccer, kids’ archery, boules, badminton and table tennis. The sitting room, kitchen and summer kitchen are all great family spaces, large enough for play. There is a flat screen satellite TV with English channels, DVD player, as well as a portable speaker which you can hook your phone, tablet or laptop to via Bluetooth. Travel cots, high chairs (in the kitchen and in the summer kitchen), anti-slip mats for the bath etc. are all provided on request. Day trips could include the cave paintings at Lascaux (1 hr, 10 mins); the medieval castle Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle (45 mins); and Park Archéologique de Beynac (50 mins), a reconstructed Neolithic village.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: from May to October - 1 week from Saturday to Saturday. From November to April the minimum stay is 6 nights. In peak season the house must be rented alongside the sister residence Le Mazet but this main house Le Mas is available independently from September to May. See custom payment and cancellation policies below. There are 2 ungated staircases in the property. There are twin bedrooms for children downstairs. Outside there are steps leading down to the pool area. The pool is ungated, but as required by French law, has a security feature of an electric cover which can hold the weight of children. The saltwater pool uses the process of electrolysis to purify the water instead adding chlorine and it is heated. This means softer water and fewer risks for allergies and irritation to eyes and skin. All the beds will be made up and bath and swimming pool towels for everyone in the bathrooms. There are hard and soft pillows on each side of the bed. There are feather or microfiber duvets and blankets available. There is parking for 4 cars.

About the Location

This residence is located just outside the village of Sainte-Croix in The Dordogne, south-west France. The Dordogne is a fantastic vacation destination for families. Steeped in history, there are 1,001 castles to see and visit, prehistoric caves and markets selling delicious local produce and wine. The Dordogne is world famous for its truffles, foie gras, strawberries and Bergerac wine. The countryside is stunning which you can enjoy on beautiful walks, canoeing down the rivers, or cycling around. Monpazier is a charming medieval town just 12 minutes away, built by Edward I of England. Beaumont is the same distance and just as old; in the summer you can go to the evening food market there and sit under the stars at long tables in the town square, eat food from stalls and dance the night away to live music. Bergerac Airport is only 35 minutes away, and Bordeaux, Toulouse and Limoges airports are all within 2 hours 30 minutes' drive. There is also the TGV fast train from Paris to Bordeaux or Libourne, from where you can hire cars.

The sitting room, like the kitchen, has a roaring fire (logs provided), 3 sofas and doors to the pool. At either end of this floor are the 2 twin rooms, 1 of which can accommodate an additional twin / single bed. Upstairs are the 2 king size master bedrooms, both with a large ensuite with a soaking tub and walk-in shower and the other king size bedroom. Outside is a summer kitchen with a dining table seating 12, a kitchen with a sink, Smeg fridge and a Weber 3 burner gas barbecue (gas provided). The 10 x 5 m pool (open from April to October) is saltwater, heated with an electric cover.

Style Notes

Historic luxury. Le Mas dates back to the 16th century with honey-colored stone walls, wooden beams, massive fireplaces and bags of character. It has been renovated by designer Joris van Grinsven, who has respected the history and character of the building but brought it into the 21st century offering comfort, stylish understatement and discreet luxury. Design furniture, hotel-style beds and an amazing attention to detail all ensure that you'll have a fantastic holiday. We love the centuries-old larder and stone évier (sink) built into the exposed stone walls in the kitchen; the baker that you text in the evening for your delivery of bread, baguettes and croissants in the morning; and the beautiful views from the pool.

Rupert moved from England to Amsterdam when he was 25 and ran his own antique shop for 5 years before going on to be the head of fundraising for the Dutch breast cancer charity. Franck was a theater producer, first traveling throughout Europe producing Cirque du Soleil for 7 years and then producing musicals and events in the Netherlands. We decided in 2015 to leave the beautiful city of Amsterdam and our careers and to move to the Dordogne - swopping one UNESCO World Heritage site for another! When we drove up the long drive to Le Mas for the first time, we realized how special the place was and how amazing it could become. We love its history, character and charm and the beautiful countryside all around it, with all the wildlife, peace and tranquility it offers. This part of France is not only beautiful, but has exemplary food and wine, culture and history. We have converted a tobacco drying barn on the property into our own home and renovated Le Mas & Le Mazet, and are very proud of how beautiful and comfortable they have become. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

Dordogne, Southwest France

The green heart of France

The rural farming heart of France is a fantastic destination for a family getaway, amid fields of sunflowers and pretty market towns. The Dordogne river itself is good for canoeing and swimming, and there are castles and chateaux to explore, caves painted with prehistoric images and, this being France, sensational food.
