Gilleleje, Copenhagen

Crab racing and quiet beaches

Under an hour from central Copenhagen by car, this pretty seaside town has long sandy beaches, a fun fisherman's themed playground (complete with crab racing track) and cafés lining the quay selling fish and chips. Rent a bike and cycle quiet lanes, play on the beach and swim in the clear water, or browse the shops for beach toys and interior design treats.

We stayed on Jael's properties over Christmas with our extended family - including a 5 year old, and a toddler. Though we were in the "off season" we still very much enjoyed the surrounding area including the beach, local restaurants, towns, etc. We also traveled into Copenhagen twice which was quite easy on the train. The house had everything we needed for cooking for a large group. There were plenty of linens for the bathrooms and bedrooms, and we appreciated the snacks, coffee, etc. that was left for us. Jael was a very responsive host. We had a slight issue on checkin finding the very well-hidden key, and with the Wifi subscription, but both were fixed with a few text messages, no problem at all. There was a note from a previous person about the safety of the wood stove. Happy to say that we had no concerns with our toddler, as they had fitted that area with a small gate to keep away curious hands. The stove warmed the place pretty quickly even on the chilliest days, though we did need bundle up for bed. We'd love to make it back to enjoy the warm, sunny weather and the bbq!

I cannot imagine a more idyllic place to spend the summer. My 18 month old loved playing on the deck and exploring the giant yard. My parents loved the comfortable beds. I loved the Nespresso machine and my husband loved the proximity of the house to the beach. If you stay here, rent a car and explore the countryside. There are many, many beautiful sights within a 30 minute drive. Jael was the perfect hostess: super responsive and totally unintrusive. Her house is even more beautiful than the pictures.

We had a great stay at Jael’s house in Munkerup (just outside Gilleleje) The house was beautiful. Very tastefully designed and decorated AND very clean! I feel it is only fair to Mention that there were a few things that made it not Very friendly for a family traveling with small Children. Namely, the open wood burning oven to heat the house and the concrete floors throughout the house. There wAs also a step leading from the kitchen to the rest of the house which was an issue for my 12 month old and my elderly grandmother. The proximity to the beach seemed Further than the description in the listing too. Apart from that Jael was a pleasure to work with and the house was very pleasant.

This house was a dream to stay in -- clean, extremely family friendly, and EXTREMELY close to the beach. The yard was so amazing -- our kids spent hours outside every day playing. The proximity of the property to Copenhagen and other beautiful towns made it easy to travel about with children. Jael was accessible, friendly, and very helpful and always promptly answered my emails. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

Jael`s house in Gilleleje is beautifully and thoughtfully (but unfussily ;)) equipped and laid out really well for many people as the communal spaces - kitchen, living room and deck are so generous. Jael herself is also just such a gracious, accommodating and lovely host. What amazed us the most however was the fabulous location and the unbelievable number of things to do within a 30-40 minutes drive - even if you get unlucky with the weather (which we unfortunately did) you cannot run out of exciting and fun adventures to go on with the kids (and grandparents too!). The entire surrounding area with its little towns and the beaches (one of the beaches is especially wonderful for the little ones - no big waves, and lots of shallow tide pools which make for perfect crab catching!) are just stunning. We will surely return to North Zealand for what this time was an incredibly relaxing, sane and fun trip, despite the constant rain!
