Perks for the Parents

This former dairy farm, set on a hill overlooking the picturesque Tallebudgera River, is 10 minutes’ drive from pristine beaches and includes chickens, peacocks, horses, koalas and kangaroos in its diverse tropical gardens. Nearby there are family-friendly parks, nature parks and bushwalks, rock pools, good cafes and shopping areas. The open plan layout and indoor/outdoor aspect of the house means it is easy for you to keep an eye on the children playing outside while you cook in the kitchen, barbecue on the veranda or relax in the hammock. There are several farmers markets on a Saturday closeby featuring local fresh produce and music. It takes 20 minutes to cycle to the beach.

Why Kids Love it

Kids love running free, exploring the farm and going to the beach. The owners have chicken, geese, peacocks and horses and love to have the kids help with feeding the animals, collecting the eggs and picking exotic tropical fruit from the orchard. There is plenty of open space for the kids to play, run free safely and explore the farm and orchard whilst you can keep an eye on them from the veranda or hammock. They may even find koalas or kangaroos! Nearby beaches are both still-water estuary beaches and surf beaches - so there is something for everyone. There is a large park across the road with a playground and cycling track, and 2 golf courses ( 9 and 18 hole), on either side of the property.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 days. The house is on 2 levels with 12 steps to the main living area and another 8 steps up to the main bathroom. The kitchen has an open pantry and store area for pots and pans which are accessible to little curious toddlers (they may need extra supervision). We offer free WI-FI and a reliable internet connection. The family bathroom has a large shower but no bath. Due to the free-range chickens and koala sanctuary, domestic pets are not allowed. A car is necessary for this area. There is plenty of parking. The owners can organise high chairs, baby baths, a change table and such other items upon request.

About the Location

Tucked in the Tallebudgera Valley, this farm is worlds away from city life but still a 15-20-minute drive from Gold Coast International Airport and the Varsity Lakes Train Station, with direct connections to Brisbane International Airport. It is under 10 minutes' drive from the famous Burleigh and Currumbin beaches and Tallebudgera estuary, with child-friendly cafés, shopping centres, library and boutique shops nearby. The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the David Fleah Wildlife park are just 10 minutes' drive away, with the Gold Coast Theme Parks (Wet & Wild, Movieworld, Dreamworld and Seaworld) a 40-minute drive away.

Built around 1920 the homestead has been lovingly restored to showcase many of its original features but with many modern conveniences, including a well equipped kitchen. The house exudes old world charm with modern appointments and a tasteful collection of Aboriginal and Australian art. The kitchen features local solid wooden camphor benchtops and the open lounge/dining area a cosy wood fireplace.

I'm a Sydneysider who now lives in Queensland. The farm has been our family holiday home for over 40 years. Every school holidays I eagerly looked forward to spending time here – waking to the birds, horseriding, swimming in the surf, bushwalking, collecting eggs, growing and cooking fresh vegetables. I have travelled and lived in Europe, Asia and South America with a special soft spot for France where I lived for a while. I recently gave up my career as a Solicitor in Sydney to escape to the serenity of the farm and Tallebudgera area where I now look after the property and work as a remedial massage therapist. I enjoy gardening and cooking (especially trialling new recipes using our exotic fruit – some of my recent successes have been yellow mangosteen cheesecake and black sapote tiramisu), teaching kids these skills and keeping a vegetable patch. I generally go to the local farmers markets of a weekend for the weekly shop and to catch up with the local producers. I love welcoming people to the farm and hosting friends and guests.

We absolutely loved our stay at this magical farmhouse - I cannot recommend this homestead and its wonderful hosts enough. The house is a historic estate, beautifully preserved and taken care of, with attention to detail everywhere. It sits on a huge property, in the middle of a large orchard full of exotic trees bearing delicious, sweet-smelling fruit, most of which we had never even heard before. There is a creek, enormous, billowing fig trees, cockatoos, horses, peacocks, geese, and all the wold-life you can dream of. We fell asleep to the soft breeze and woke up to laughing kookaburras. Justy is wonderful and welcomed us with a home-baked, delicious cake with fruits from the orchard, took our children out to feed the animals and showed us all around the farm and the orchard. She and the helpers at the farm are all wonderful and helpful in all ways they can. We will be back for sure!
