Perks for the Parents

This classic Amsterdam townhouse guest house is located between a pretty canal and a bustling shopping street and makes a fantastic home from home. Named after the visionary Dutch author Multatuli who lived in this house as a child, it is light, clean and simple with a large living space and great family-sized kitchen. Close to the station and the central areas of the city, it’s still quiet at night. A babysitter or nanny can be arranged and a masseur can be arranged to visit the apartment.

Why Kids Love it

There is great provision for small children with high chair, travel crib, stair gates and more - just ask on booking. The owners provide toys and games for babies and toddlers and can add those for older kids on request. They also have books in Dutch and English on request. There are plenty of attractions that appeal to kids a short walk away, from the canals and their boats and ducks to kids concept clothing stores and family-friendly pizza restaurants. There is a playground at the back of the block.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights, 5 nights during Christmas/New Year and King's Day. The owners live in the apartment below. The residence has a private entry, separate from the owner’s apartment. There is no elevator and the guest house is on the second, third and fourth floors. Amsterdam stairs are steep. Note that the attic room cannot be fully gated and is not ideal for younger children, who would be better sleeping on the floor below. Rates listed are for 6 guests; up to 2 extra guests can be accommodated on the sofa beds in the attic and are charged at €50 per person, per night. The residence has WiFi and TV.

About the Location

In the Haarlemmerbuurt area of central Amsterdam, the house is set between the Brouwersgracht canal - voted the prettiest canal in Amsterdam - and Haarlemmerstraat - voted the best shopping street in the Netherlands. It is a fantastic location. Car rental is not necessary as the house is close to public transport links, with Centraal station 7 minutes’ walk away and bike rental on the same street. It is around 20 minutes by car/taxi to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, 30 minutes by public transport.

Accommodation Details

This townhouse is laid out over 3 stories, with an open plan living space with cozy sofas, a family kitchen and dining area on one floor, and 2 double/twin bedrooms on the next floor up. The attic space has 2 single beds or a kingsize bed plus 2 sofa beds. There are 2 bathrooms: one with bath and shower ensuite to the master bedroom and a separate shower room. Beds can be arranged as twins or doubles.

Style Notes

Classic Amsterdam townhouse. The house is close to the city’s classic canals and has plenty of light and space. The bedrooms have crisp white linen, pine floors and white walls; the attic has sloping ceilings and plenty of character. The whole house is decorated in harmonious natural colors. We love the spacious living area and the cozy bedroom in the attic, with unusual beams and large skylights.

Joanna is from London and runs her own business (importing children's Micro scooters to the Netherlands). MP is from Amsterdam and is a professional pianist. In 2006 we bought our house from an old lady who had lived there for 38 years. We completely renovated it and now live with our two daughters (2006 and 2009) in the bottom half of the house, renting out the separate apartment in the top half. We love Amsterdam! We can tip you off about local hangouts that you have to live here to know about and all the highlights that you really ought to see. This is the best area of the city to live in, that's why we picked it. Everything we need is right on our doorstep, we hardly ever have to leave our 'hood. You'll love it here too!
