Style Notes

The living room was featured on Design Stars and was designed by the final contestant designer for the final show. We are native New Yorkers looking to travel with our children to interesting places. We like to travel when school is out which is a week each in February and April, then any time during the summer.

Harlem, Manhattan

DJ sets and double dutch

This part of Upper Manhattan runs from the East River to the Hudson and is known for its treelined brownstone blocks and multicultural community. Stop by the Totally Kid Carousel in Riverbank State Park - it’s the only one in the world designed by kids - or enjoy impromptu concerts, DJ sets and plays in the neighborhood's many parks in the summer.

Liz is the most considerate host and had prepared the house very thoughtfully for us. Bedroom air con and big ceiling fans in the living areas were essential for making the summer heat bearable. The house is spacious - more so than the photographs suggest, although the kitchen really is small! Our teenagers loved having their own floor and bathroom at the top of the house, and the younger 2 kids enjoyed all of the books and toys on offer. The house is accessed by a steep flight of steps, typical of New York brownstones, which is not really practical for strollers unless you have extra hands! The neighbourhood is full of character and great places to eat and go out - with live in teenage babysitters we made the most of this! The rest of New York is really easily accessible with express metro lines downtown and into Brooklyn. City Mapper app made navigation very easy. Central Park is an easy walk away too. Liz was promptly on hand by email with suggestions of activities and lots of recommendations for where to buy groceries, etc. All in all it made for a great family holiday.
