Perks for the Parents

With design quirks, a climbing wall in one kids room and a giant baby deer in another, plus calming and beautiful family rooms, this central Amsterdam house is a knock-out. There is a lovely small garden for afternoon sun or dinner outside, and a bench at the front of the house for people watching and morning sun. Hire bikes and tour the cobbled streets, pick up fresh food from the market then return home to cook it in the large kitchen, just like a local family.

Why Kids Love it

Kids will love the design-filled rooms with plenty to see and do. One children’s bedroom has a climbing wall while the other 2 have high sleeper beds (better for age 6+) accessed via steps and colorful walls. Playful design is at the heart of the home. Everything is well set up for kids with toys, books, games and Netflix. The house is walking distance from shopping streets and public transport, with easy links to museums and galleries.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. The residence is set over 2 floors, ground and first floor, and has ungated stairs. The high sleeper bedrooms (yellow and pink) have steep steps and no rails and are better for children aged 6 +. They are not suitable for babies or toddlers. The green children’s room could suit a child aged 4 +. The staircase is very steep, typical of Amsterdam town houses. Bike rental is available in the neighborhood for a truly Dutch experience. Two extra cribs are available on request, as is a double air bed. Pets welcome. The owners can fill the fridge in advance on request (for an extra fee).

About the Location

The residence is in the Helmersbuurt area of the city on a quiet family-friendly residential street. The area is just west of the center. One of the best bakeries in the city, 't Vlaamsch Broodhuys, is just across the road. It is close to Vondelpark and 10 minutes on the tram from Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum. It is 15 minutes from Schiphol airport by car; 30 minutes by train and tram and is well connected by public transportation. The closest public transport is the tram, lines 3, 12 and 1, just 2 minutes' walk away. No need to hire a car - but if you do, there is paid parking nearby.

Accommodation Details

This 2-story house includes an open living space, kitchen and dining room. There are 4 bedrooms, 1 with a queensize bed and 3 with high sleeper beds. The high sleeper beds in the pink and yellow rooms are queen size and the high sleeper in the green room is single size. Note that they are not suitable for babies or toddlers. The bathroom has a separate shower and bath, and there is an additional toilet. There is a small garden at the back and a bench at the front overlooking the street.

Style Notes

Modern fairytale. This fabulous Dutch home was fully remodelled in 2016 in partnership with a TV company and has been featured in a Dutch interior magazine. Images featured here are by Barbara Kieboom. Children’s bedrooms contain treats like hidden sleeping platforms, huge beanbags and quirky decals; family living spaces are warm and comfortable with shaggy Moroccan rugs. We love the inspired design, the great location and the mid century modern living room.

I am a entrepreneur (web designer & event concepts/management) and a mom of three. We love living in our spacious and comfy home in the middle of the city. I can't live without my family, friends, music, internet & good wine+food. My style of travelling is 'live like the locals do' - try to get off the beaten track by just walking around town or asking advice to local people in a bar or grocery store. I love to make myself at home and offer the possibilities for other people to do the same when they visit me.

Julien.

It was a wonderful experience. We had a time full of adventure, loving people and an exciting city. Thank you so much to Marre and her lovely family who exchanged their home/house and their neighborhood with us. Especially in these days, it is all the more important to deal confidently with other nations and cultures. For us as a family of 5 it is a perfect way to show our kids the world and educate them without prejudice against anything. Thank you to kid&coe for this super home exchange platform !

This is a fantastic property. It is located on a quiet residential street in the heart of the museum district. Although the street itself is very quiet, you are within a few minutes walk of loads of great places to eat, bakeries to buy breakfast, several supermarkets, various tram lines and many of Amsterdam's best attractions (Vondelpark, various museums). The location really could not be better. There is even a little playground on the corner with a trampoline and various climbing frames. The house itself is absolutely beautiful - very stylish but also child friendly. There is a lovely master bedroom with one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. There are three children's bedrooms, which all have high beds accessed up a flight of stairs. They wouldn't be great for adults, as the beds are so close to the ceiling you can't sit up in them, but my 8 year old daughter absolutely loved them and slept very well up there. There is a good shower, a washing machine and tumble dryer and an additional downstairs toilet. Marre, our host, always responded to messages very quickly and although she was not in Amsterdam during our visit she made arrangements to hand over the keys and sent messages to check we were ok. The only negative I can think of is that the stairs are very steep and the steps themselves are narrow. They would be difficult to navigate for anyone with mobility difficulties and young children would need to be closely supervised. This was not a problem for us at all but it is something to bear in mind. We would definitely stay here again if we were in Amsterdam.

We had a wonderful stay in and throughly enjoyed both the house and the neighborhood. The home is beautifully decorated and the kids were so happy and busy with all of the toys. We ended up spending more time at the house than expected because we felt so comfortable there. Our two bigger kids loved running across the street to play at the playground. There are tons of shops and restaurants nearby- we especially enjoyed Foodhallen.

We had a wonderful stay at Marre's house. The location is great, lots of restaurants and shops nearby, everything is within walking (or biking) distance. That makes sightseeing and exploring the city with kids really easy. There are many toys for the kids to play with, so everyone is happy even if the weather should be bad.

We loved our stay at Helmersstraat residence! The neighborhood is fantastic and we had a great time. Marre, the host, met us at the home and was extremely helpful and responsive. Our three year old son loved the toys in the house and the playground across the street. Highly recommend.

The Amsterdam house we stayed in was wonderful, light filled and perfect for our family of 2 adults and 3 small kids. The stairs were steep but we come from San Francisco so our kids are used to such adventures! The house was super clean and character filled and the location was perfect especially for our short, first trip to Amsterdam, we were able to walk or go easily by canal or tram to all the places we needed to be, museums, galleries, parks and train station for European train connections etc. Grocery stores, fab restaurants and ice cream were also within a very short walk of the house.

We had a wonderful time in Amsterdam, it is a beautiful city and The Helmersstraat Residence is in a fantastic location. Easy access to some of the most famous parks, beautiful restaurants nearby and the public transport system is easy to use. The house does have an extremely steep staircase but it also has safety gates. There are plenty of toys and the children's bedroom is beautifully decorated with charming features. The baby room is perfectly set up and very cosy and the kitchen living room was lovely to spend the evenings relaxing in. We even made use of the open fire!

Amsterdam made for a fantastic family-friendly city break and we would definitely considering returning to the city and to Marre's lovely house. The whole place was very spacious and we felt at home from the outset. The toys were perfect for our girls and we appreciated the homely touches and beautiful bunch of flowers left behind. The location was perfect - peaceful but close to the heart of town and we were able to walk everywhere. There was a fantastic local café and Italian restaurant - both within five minutes walk that we returned to many times. Also a great bookshop and baby clothing store. Highly recommended.

Helmersbuurt, Amsterdam

Townhouses and juice cafés

This popular family neighborhood in western Amsterdam is a few blocks from the Vondelpark with some streets right on a canal plus cafés, restaurants and yoga studios nearby. It’s easy to walk or cycle to the center of the city along with the museum quarter, and it is a little more urban and edgy than some of the south Amsterdam districts.
