Perks for the Parents

This airy apartment on an idyllic historic estate in the middle of the forest next to Sweden’s largest private lake is ideal for a relaxing countryside vacation. It has fantastic swimming, walking, cycling and canoeing options plus blueberry and lingon picking and mushrooming in a very calm environment. There are bikes, canoes and a rowing boat available for use, plus a good hi fi. It is a short walk through the woods to a sandy lake beach, and beach house with sauna. You may spot deer and elk in the forest.

Why Kids Love it

There is so much space to explore - the property is in the forest surrounded by a nature reserve with trails to run along and lovely beaches to swim from. It is very quiet and calm. There are great opportunities to connect with nature. A small selection of toys, games and books are provided. A crib and high chair are available and there is a children's bedroom with twin beds. There may be chickens to feed in the summer. The nearby town of Hjo sells great ice cream and has a heated open air pool and pretty harbour.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 5 nights. There are steps up to the flat with a stair gate available on request. The lake is a forest lake with no lifeguards etc so parents must supervise children. Parking available next to the apartment. The building itself is an old wash house and bakery for a large country estate and has no other apartments in it. The hosts can show guests around the old bread ovens and copper pans used for washing. There is no WiFi and cell phone signals can be unreliable. Car rental is essential for this rural area. Row boats, canoes and bikes are shared with the other properties in the estate.

About the Location

The apartment is on Alvasjön Lake, Sweden’s largest private lake, around 25 minutes from the town of Hjo. It is an easy 2-hour drive from Gothenburg Landvetter Airport with 3 medium sized towns within a 25-minute drive and Lake Vättern a short drive away. Jönköping and Skövde are within an hour's drive. There is a village shop about 10 minutes away but note that the area is highly rural with few residential properties. It is a classic Swedish lakeside retreat, set in pine and silver birch forests with only a handful of other properties around the lake. Stockholm is approximately 4 hours' drive away.

Accommodation Details

This 2-bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment has a large kitchen diner, 2 lovely bedrooms (one large double with lake views and a kingsize bed, one with 2 twin beds), and a sitting room with lake views and a sofa bed. There is a modern well appointed shower room. The garden includes plenty of lawn around the apartment with teak sun loungers, chairs and a table, and leads down to the lake.

Style Notes

Swedish country chic. The decor is light and airy with a mix of furniture from different eras, including mid century and antiques. The rooms with views of the lake have beautiful traditional Swedish Kakelugn (tile-covered stoves), for decorative purposes only. The sitting room has traditional toile de jouy wallpaper for country chic. We love the views and the spacious bedrooms with white-painted wood floors.

Ed, Sara, Ella and Simon live in Saltsjöbaden outside Stockholm most of the year and at Alvasjö our idyllic lakeside retreat in the summers. We love spending time at the beach in Comporta too!

Lakes, rivers and sled rides

On the western shore of Lake Vättern in south Sweden, four hour’s drive from Stockholm, Hjo is a water and nature lover’s dream. Be charmed by the simple wooden houses, the lovely parklands and beautiful landscape. Take the kids to the city park, visit the bison farm or check out local handmade crafts at Butik Rustik boutique. Call in at a kennel to see how sled-dogs live and listen to stories about their adventures north of the Arctic Circle.

We had an amazing stay in Alvasjon - one of our best, most relaxing vacations ever! Spent every day swimming in the private lake, hopping in the sauna, hiking in the forest, and picking fresh blueberries. Our 5 year old had a blast hunting for frogs and butterflies, while we parents got in plenty of reading and rest. Hjo and the surrounding area is a quick and easy drive, with plenty of restaurants and activities to mix things up a bit. Ed and Sara are beyond helpful and have wonderful tips to make your stay even better. This is a really special property, and we hope to come back soon!

We had a fantastisch stay at the Alvasjön residence. We stayed there with our 3 kids age 5,3 and 1. Everything was there in the house to make our stay comfortable and memorable. The house is lovely decorated and very well equipped. There were lots of toys for the children. Ed was very helpful and responsive to all our queries. The area around the lake is fantastic. Even with less than favourable weather we greatly enjoyed it. And sending the kids in the morning to fetch a few eggs was an experience they will remember for a while. We highly recommend this place. Thanks for hosting us.

Alvasjö is truly a one of a kind place. The setting in the forest by the lake is simply stunning. It's a place to disconnect and get away from it all. It's also a time to really re-connect with each other. Cannot remember the last time I felt so relaxed, with just nature and each other's company to enjoy. No screen-time here, instead swimming, rowing, fishing, biking, walking, playing,... Both our kids (5 and 3) loved playing on the beach, exploring the forest (looking for berries!), feeding the chickens, and getting cosy in the flat (yes, multiple stacks of pancakes were baked during our stay). The flat is very comfortable and has everything you could possibly need, including plenty of toys. Ed provided a ton of information beforehand and we were greeted by his very kind in-laws who went out of their way to show us around and provide great tips on what to do and where to go.

We were pleased to stay at Alvasjon residence. The house was just as beautiful as in pictures; big, clean and had spectacular view. This is the first time I didn’t feel the need to go anywhere else.We had everything we needed: private beach, mountain bikes, forest and the weather was gorgeous! The hosts libe on site and were very friendly; whenever we had questions they were there for us.

We had a wonderful week at Alvasjön in July 2018. Ed is a great host and his parents in law, Maud and Michael, are very loving and caring, giving us an amazing welcome and making us feeling at home abroad. They showed us around the house, the lake and the surrounding area as well as the activities and local attractions nearby as well as within a short ride by bike and car, and were there whenever we had a question or needed help. When you (like me) love the German movie series "Inga Lindström" and ever wanted to spend your holiday at a typical summer house in Sweden, this is the place to be. It is surrounded by forests, which invite you to do long walks every day. The lake is just the most beautiful private lake we ever saw and swimming in it was great same as enjoying the beautiful sandy beach. We have been there with our 1 year old boy and there was just everything in and around the house we could imagine including toys, baby chair etc. Alvasjön is a magical place to spend your Sweden Summer holiday in and we will definitely come back one day! Thank you so much!

We had a magical couple of weeks here with our young family. It's a beautiful, peaceful location, where there is nothing and everything to do. We filled our days swimming, cycling, exploring the forest ... Really good memories.

We had the most fantastic time at the Alvasjon 2 Residence! What you can't see from the photos is that there are hidden cupboards with toys and books, plus a lake house with canoes and beach toys. We spent a week playing on the sandy beach, jumping off the floating platform into the lake and cycling in the fairytale forest following deer prints and looking for trolls. It's a wonderful, peaceful, relaxing and magical place. Ed and Sara were terrific hosts and have everything set up perfectly for families. Side note: Sweden was not as expensive as we had feared - supermarket prices were not that different from the UK.
