Perks for the Parents

This bright and breezy 2-bedroom apartment on car-free Lamma Island, 25 minutes by ferry from Hong Kong island, is a great choice for a family stay in the city, with views over the sea and mountains. The location means you can easily explore Hong Kong’s skyscrapers and busy markets one day, its theme parks the next and its tranquil outlying islands and beaches too. The master bedroom has a walk-in closet and has french windows opening directly onto the terrace. In the evening after the kids have gone to bed, the roof terrace provides a tranquil environment for a glass of wine. The nearest shop is 2 minutes down the stairs and has everything you will need for your stay including child and baby products; there is also an organic store on the island. The nearest beach is a 10-15 minute walk through a green path.

Why Kids Love it

Lamma Island is a great spot for kids - it is car-free and child-friendly, and children are very safe wandering on their own all the time. The beach is a 10-15 minute walk away. The owner have everything for a baby or toddler, including a crib that can convert into a toddler bed, a baby bath, high chair, bouncer, bumbo etc. The living room sofa bed opens into a comfortable double bed for older children. There is plenty of space for them to play in the flat. It is very quiet at night.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 1 week. The apartment is on the second floor with no elevator. There are stairs, but there are doors to each staircase, so unless your children can reach the doorknob, it is very safe. Note that there is no TV. The roof terrace and terrace on the first floor have child-safe glass panels which children cannot get through. There is an organic shop as well as a German bakery as well as small shops nearby selling everything you need from diapers to wet wipes to western products such as cheese and ham.

About the Location

Lamma Island is one of Hong Kong’s outlying islands. Located 25 minutes from the center of Hong Kong by fast ferry and 28 minutes from Hong Kong airport by express train, it is a calm oasis in the city. The apartment is 7 minutes from the ferry terminal and close to all shops. There are cafés and seafood restaurants on Lamma Island as well as hikes and beaches which children love. There is a morning fish market near the pier.

Accommodation Details

This 2-floor apartment has a master bedroom with walk-in closet (rare in Hong Kong!), living room, baby/toddler room and bathroom/shower on the first floor and a fully-equipped open western kitchen plus dining space, office and second bathroom/shower on the second floor. There is a terrace running along the whole first floor and a large roof terrace on the second floor. On one side is a view to the sea and the other a views over the mountains of Lamma island.

Style Notes

Bright and comfortable. The apartment is modern with some Asian accents. The kitchen is fully equipped with western goods - which is unusual for Hong Kong. Living spaces inside are a little compact but with the addition of the terrace and balcony, there is room for a small family to relax. The views of the bustling town and serene mountains are wonderful. We love the greenery throughout and the relaxed, easy living spaces, along with the location.

My husband and I spent the past year travelling by land from Brussels to Hong Kong. It was an amazing time exploring the world and its people and most of all its food! We created a food & travel blog along the way - www.funnelogychannel.com At the end of the trip we decided we were ready to expand our family and now we have a baby boy. We are very excited to start travelling with him as well even though it is a big change from our extremely light backpacking days! We have already done a short trip to Taiwan before he is 5 months so are looking for kid friendly places to travel to and that is how we found Kid & Coe, such a fantastic idea. During our journey to the East our top three destinations were Iran, Eastern Turkey and Myanmar. Now that we are based in Asia for the time-being, we cannot wait to explore all these food destinations!

Hong Kong, Far East

Skyscrapers, sushi and the Star Ferry

Glittering Hong Kong is a city with something for everyone. Want fast-paced, bustling street markets, sumptuous restaurants and some of the best sushi in the world? It’s here. But if you prefer a quieter life, nature trails, beaches and island hopping, it’s here too. For kids, Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park are star attractions; just as fun is eating in restaurants overlooking the sea with tanks of fish to choose from. Night market noodles, views from The Peak and a trek up the 268 steps to the Big Buddha are also on the must-do list. There’s more than enough to do here for a week or more.
