Perks for the Parents

This White Mountains retreat is ideal for family fun in the countryside, set on over 30 acres with views of 3 mountain ranges and plenty to do nearby. The house is set up with wraparound decks to enjoy the view, and has a full kitchen and family dining area, plus a stunning double height main room. Bedrooms include a master bedroom for parents with ensuite bathroom with a jetted tub. Explore the great outdoors from this fantastic setting, near the Vermont border; outdoor features included .75 miles of walking trails, a campfire and horseshoes.

Why Kids Love it

The house has accumulated a variety of toys, board games and books over the years. For older children, wooded walking trails, electronic keyboard, campfire are great fun; young children just enjoy the space to run and play. Children might also enjoy the ping pong table in the heated basement garage. The house is in a tourist area with amusement parks, biking trails, aerial zip-lines, ski areas, hiking trails, waterfalls and mountain rivers close by. It is within 6 miles of the highly-acclaimed Santa Themed children's amusement park.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days. The house is modern in style and furnishings are high end. Some building materials and architectural features may be less obviously family-friendly, but they do not present any known issues with children. There are glass panels on the floating stairway and upstairs there is a balcony the full length of the house with painted iron rails. Gates can not be installed on the stairway, which has open tread stairs. Young children may need a little extra help and supervision around these areas. The hill is steep and there are granite cliffs and rugged terrain in the areas off the trails. Car rental is essential: taxis are rare. A crib, high chair, baby toys, bath toys and baby bath can be provided on request. There are 6 golf courses within 20 miles and 3 spas within 6 miles. Six local ski areas are within 40 miles.

About the Location

The house is in the heart of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, 6 miles/10 minutes’ drive from the town of Jefferson. This is a paradise for outdoor mountain-loving families. There are many state parks, tram ways, ski mountains, biking trails, hiking trails, amusement parks and a children's summer theater; whatever time of year you visit, there is always something to do. Almost all restaurants in the area are child-friendly. Weathervane Summer Theater and nearby restaurants are 10 minutes away; Santa's Village Theme Park for young families is less than 15 minutes, Franconia Notch State Park is 35 minutes, and hiking trails and the Cog Railway on the slopes of Mount Washington are only 25 minutes away. Boston and Montreal are both a 3-hour drive away; Burlington International airport is a 2-hour drive away.

Accommodation Details

This 3-bedroom, 2-floor New England shingle-style house has a large open plan great room, TV area, dining area centered on a 2-story Russian Fireplace and a chef's kitchen with bar, large center island and breakfast nook. Upstairs, the bedrooms are off the balcony with a library common area and game table, and include a master bedroom with ensuite bathroom and queensize bed, and a north and middle bedroom, both with queen beds. Bathrooms include tubs and showers. There is also a sauna and a heated basement with ping pong, plus multiple wraparound decks with Adirondack chairs and views. The property is set on 30 acres at the top of a hill in the upper Mount Washington valley with mesmerising views of 3 mountain ranges and the Connecticut River Valley.

Style Notes

Country chic. Bright, light, open, modern, sophisticated and very functional, the house has playful pastel accents, ash flooring, and a real sense of style. Mid-century modern furniture sits beautifully with the well thought-out common areas areas for the whole family. The house is centered on the Russian fireplace with 2 chimneys that form a Gothic arch, and there is a moose antler between them. The double height living room adds a sense of grandeur. The sweeping decks have plenty of space and seating to stop and admire the views. Surrounded by acres of land with hiking trails, woodlands and campfire areas, this is the perfect setting for kids to play in nature and explore routes and trails. We love the view of the house lit up at night, with stained glass features, the spacious bedrooms with desks and views, and the great kitchen.
