The location is walkable to great restaurants, cafes, healthy eating places and wine bars, not to mention water sports and beautiful beaches. The host's top tip? Boost your immune system and mental performance with a dip in the Renu Therapy cold plunge tank in the garden.

Why Kids Love it

The house is great for toddlers, children and teenagers. The lush green backyard is a safe space to play (with no alley behind, a rarity in San Diego) and a fun spot to hang out - the hosts have an outdoor art and craft area where kids can paint, try out ‘experiments’ or relax under a tree. The ocean is close enough for even the littlest legs and at low tide there are small tide pools where kids can discover ocean animals. There are books in English and German, as well as tons of toys including American Girl Dolls, Lego., Schleich Horses with barn, dress-up clothes, 2 huge play horses to ride on, skateboards, scooters, 2 boogie boards and a surf board. Teenagers love the area as it's walkable to Starbucks, surf shops with food and other cafes.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 5 nights. Safety notes: there are stairs to reach the front door. The cold plunge is in the garden with a cover, but could be removed by children, so supervision is recommended. No food or red wine are permitted in the living room and usage of placemats for tableware and drinks on the dining table are essential. Parking is available in front of the house and on the street, although car rental is not necessary. Quiet hours are observed between 10pm and 6am. No parties and no visitors. The hosts have 2 kids bikes and 1 adult bike available to borrow. You can also rent bikes in the bike store nearby and cycle to La Jolla City Center, Windansea Beach or to Mission Bay in Pacific Beach.

About the Location

The house is located in beautiful Bird Rock, in La Jolla, San Diego. The surf spot and Tourmaline beach is accessible within 100 steps, walkable along the shores on a stony path within 5 minutes (or you can take the car to the Tourmaline parking spot). It’s also walkable to restaurants, cafes and surf shops. The airport is 20-30 minutes away by car and there are bus stops 5 minutes away on foot if you want to visit La Jolla City Center or Pacific Beach. A nice ocean view park (Calumet Park) is 3 minutes’ walk and Kate Session Park (5 minutes’ drive) offers amazing views over San Diego all the way to Coronado Island.

Accommodation Details

The house has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, all set over 1 floor. You’ll find a large open living/dining and kitchen area, and there are also 2 outdoor dining areas: 1 on the terrace overlooking the surf spot and the ocean with amazing sunset views, and another in the backyard with views over the lush green garden. The primary bedroom (with a kingsize bed) faces the beautiful garden and features an ensuite bathroom. The second bedroom boasts ocean views and a comfortable queensize bed, while the children’s room has a bunk bed, a piano, toys, a desk and swing in the room. Outside, the beautiful grass area in the garden is ideal for kids to play while parents can relax in the lounge area or at the dining table.

The hosts have chosen well-known, high end designer indoor and outdoor furniture from Germany and Italy such as Vitra, E15, Tom Dixon, USM Haller, Kettal and more. The gourmet kitchen with a breakfast bar boasts Bertazzoni appliances and opens to grande exquisite grande dining table and a cozy living room anchored by a timeless fireplace. We love the contemporary bathrooms, the stunning marble kitchen countertop and the exotic desert-inspired garden.

Payment policy
When a host accepts your booking, we will automatically charge your card 30% of the total cost of the stay on acceptance if the check in date is more than 6 weeks away. We will send you a balance payment reminder at 6 weeks before check in and you will be required to submit your payment to finalise your reservation. If a host accepts your booking and the check in date is 6 weeks away or less, we will charge your card 100% of the total cost of the stay on acceptance.
Cancellation policy
For cancellations notified up to 6 weeks before the check in date, guests will receive a refund of any amount paid less 10% of the total cost of the booking. For cancellations notified at 6 weeks or less before the check in date, no refunds are given unless the host agrees. If a host does agree to a full or partial refund, this amount will be returned to the guest less 10% of the total cost of the booking. Some hosts will also allow a stay to be rescheduled. Guests should contact their host for further information regarding any request to change the dates of a stay.

Bird Rock La Jolla is the place we settled as its family friendly with amazing surfing, restaurants, museums and much more. When we go home to Germany we offer our beach oasis to other families that they get the chance to enjoy our home, the amazing location, great surf, beaches and our fantastic neighbourhood.

Just 15 minutes north of downtown San Diego, this chic, laid-back surf town is a wonderful spot for a family vacation. Not only are you within easy reach of Legoland, San Diego Zoo and San Diego Wild Animal Park, but there are fantastic family-friendly beaches on the doorstep and some great new friends to make. Stroll along Coast Boulevard to the Children’s Pool to see the town’s famous seals and sea lions; surf, snorkel or explore tide pools on the beach, and find out more about the local wildlife at the Birch Aquarium.
