Perks for the Parents

This luxury villa, surrounded by 10 acres of private land and with views of vineyards and olive groves, has been renovated from near abandonment to incredible beauty with design touches to die for. It sleeps up to 12 + 2. The villa is simply huge with ample space inside and out and grounds that include orchards, vegetable gardens and an infinity pool, so that everybody can find their own special place to sit, nap, read, play or enjoy the views. The generously-sized bedrooms all have large private baths. Rustle up a feast from the local market in the gourmet kitchen, or ask the staff to prepare a farm-to-table meal served on the outdoor pergola. You’ll eat most of your meals surrounded by Mediterranean flowering plants, herbs and roses. The pool, with a shallow area for little kids and a large grass area in front for playing are visually connected to the house. Parents will be pleased to know that there is a wine cellar with more than 300 bottles of wine to enjoy.

Why Kids Love it

Kids will feel a great sense of freedom at Tenuta dell'Alto and will happily spend most of their time outside in the gardens or at the pool where there are inflatable toys for water fun. Guests are provided with 6 bikes for exploring the countryside and to go shopping, bocce balls and other games for playing outdoors. There are kids’ toys and books too. The grounds are safe for children and ripe for their own adventures with an organic vegetable garden, walled orange grove, formal garden, chicken coop and a fruit orchard. Children will delight in picking their own grapes, oranges, figs, pomegranates, quinces, citruses, prickly pears and vegetables, and collecting organic eggs from the chickens each morning. Or when they’re feeling sleepy, a family hammock area underneath Mediterranean pine trees provides the perfect spot for an afternoon doze in the shade. The house is also equipped with cribs and high chairs for babies.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 nights. The price listed is for 12 people in 6 bedrooms; an additional 2 guests can be added for $60 per day. Cribs are included. **Please note: One bedroom is completely detached from the main building and is located by the pool. A 2nd bedroom is in the main house but accessed through an exterior door that is right next to the kitchen door and connected through a covered portico. An additional bedroom is on the 2nd floor and also accessed externally through a short covered portico. Please note there is an open staircase in the living room leading to the wine cellar, which is also open.** The swimming pool is ungated so young children will need supervision around it and on the roof terrace. It is not heated but that is not typically necessary in summer. There are ungated steps leading up to the house and inside. Window guards have been fitted. The residence comes with WiFi, bed linens, bath and hand towels, pool towels, soaps, shampoos and detergents. It also includes 3 midweek cleans and a final clean. A daily maid service is available on request. Rates include the exclusive use of the house and grounds, including swimming pool (open from May through October) and the concierge service. The price does not include house heating costs in winter or AC use in the summer. Rates are for 12 guests, the additional 2 twin beds are extra. There is parking at the property and a car is recommended to explore the area. NOTE: The host requires a $2000 refundable security deposit to be sent directly 1 week prior to check in.

About the Location

The residence is located in the countryside midway between the cities of Brindisi and Lecce in Italy’s southern Puglia region. The nearest airport is at Brindisi, a 20 taxi-ride away, with links to major European cities. Lecce, 20 minutes by car, is called the Florence of the south for good reason: baroque architecture blends with a vibrant street life and wonderful restaurants and shops. Ostuni, Gallipoli and Otranto are other destinations to explore. Sun-baked Puglia is perfect for a family holiday with creamy white beaches lapped with turquoise sea, with shallow bays that suit young children. There’s also snorkeling, scuba diving, cliff jumping and plenty of eating and sightseeing to do. Rental includes a concierge service to arrange trips to vineyards, make restaurant reservations, organize a chef for a cooking class (a special one for kids is available) and a cook to make you meals at home.

Accommodation Details

This historic villa lies beyond gates with a formal driveway flanked by trees. It has 6 super kingsize, air-conditioned bedrooms, each with 6 ensuite bathrooms (2 have freestanding tubs and double sinks), sitting areas and personal safes. Two twin beds can accommodate an additional 2 guests on request and there are 2 cribs available. Downstairs, there are formal and informal spaces; the entrance is an octagonal vaulted room and the dining room is connected to the outdoor terrace with a view of the valley and its olive groves and vineyards. There is a high spec, open-plan kitchen, and a formal dining room that leads out to a portico for al fresco dining with a table seating up to 10. Other spaces on the ground floor include a small library with paperbacks, an MP3 player and TV. Surrounding Tenuta dell'Alto are the grounds with terraces, a hammock area, infinity pool, olive and orange groves, fruit orchards, an organic vegetable garden, chicken coop, formal gardens with outdoor seating and a renovated 17th century chapel. There is also a roof terrace for sunbathing and star-gazing.

Style Notes

Italian luxe. Tenuta dell'Alto was built as a country residence for a noble family from Lecce in the early 1800s. The current owners have brought it back to life with a slice of contemporary cool and modern luxury, while retaining some of the original floors and walls. Local materials combine elegantly with modern art pieces and a sculpture collection, while the vaulted stone ceilings keep it cool in the summer. We love everything about this beautiful villa – from the sheer amount of spaces within the grounds to relax and rejuvenate, to the plethora of green glass pendant lights that hang bewitchingly over the dining room table, to the antique stone olive oil trough that’s been transformed into a luxurious bath tub. From the food and wine, to the villa and the views, this is a place where savoring and enjoying comes naturally.

Mark and I have been collecting homes in beautiful places since 2007 in Italy and Mexico. We buy them, fully restore them, and make them available to guests! We love doing this and sharing them and take great pride in doing so!

Lecce, Puglia

The most beautiful city in Puglia

Lecce, set south of Brindisi on the heel of Italy's boot, is the most beautiful city in Puglia, with honey-colored sandstone buildings, historic streets, baroque churches and wrought iron balconies filled with tumbling flowers. Wander streets in search of gelato, take trips to beaches on either coast and enjoy the quiet streets, history and wonderful food.
