Perks for the Parents

This private unit in a wing of an 18th century house with a pool in rural Provence has grand spaces, a stone-vaulted kitchen and its own vineyards. It sleeps up to 20 + 1. The property has been owned by the same aristocratic family for over 5 generations and was renovated in 2017 to bring contemporary design to the historic house. Along with beautiful living spaces, it also has its own frescoed 18th-century chapel. The residence is divided into 2 levels, each with its own kitchens and bathrooms, and has plenty of social and private space for families or friends travelling together. It is great for a large group or 2-3 families traveling together.

Why Kids Love it

This property is great for free-range kids, cousins, friends and more. They can build wooden huts in the forest, ride their bicycles, play ping pong, swim in the pool, play petanque or find a quiet nook to read in the shade. There are toys, games and children’s books in the house, as well as everything you’ll need for little ones including bed rails, a baby bath, a changing table, dinnerware, 2 wooden cribs with bedding and a high chair. All the family will enjoy the outdoor living on the covered outdoor terrace in a land famed for its cuisine of sun-ripened tomatoes, olive oil and pastries.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights. The house is safe and secure for young children with fireplace guards, window locks, stair gates and a pool gate. The apartment is independent with a private entrance, terrace and pool. The pool is surrounded by walls that are over a meter high. Access is only by gates locked with a security code. Catering and an au pair can be provided on request. Some windows open fully so very young children may need supervision; one of the bedrooms opens to a balcony, where children should be supervised. The children's bedrooms have a window guard. There is WiFi, cable TV, a DVD player and a sound system. Many of the bedrooms have desks for guests who need to work on holiday. Car hire is recommended to explore the area and there is covered parking for up to 3 cars at the property.

About the Location

The residence is set in its own vineyards in the hilltop Provencal village of Lubéron. The nearest airport is in Marseille, a 45-minute drive away. Car rental is essential in this area. On Saturdays there is a direct Eurostar train from London to Avignon that takes about 6 hours. You can also also reach the area by train to Lille and then a TGV train down to Avignon or Aix. It is 30 minutes to Aix-en-Provence and 50 minutes to Marseille. Local vineyards, Provençal markets, biking, hiking and walking are on the doorstep.

Accommodation Details

The property has 7 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms laid out over 2 levels. On the ground floor there are reception rooms including a dining room seating 8, living room and a library, plus a modern kitchen. There is also a bathroom on this floor. One floor up, you will find a large living room, plus a master queensize suite with a dressing room, bathroom and separate toilet. There is also a second, large master bedroom with a queensize bed and its own bathroom, and 2 bedrooms with 2 twin/single beds in each plus a wooden crib, which share a family bathroom. On the second floor there are 2 queensize bedrooms, a child’s bedroom with a bunkbed, and 2 bathrooms. There is large living room with a kitchen and double sofa bed that can function as an extra bedroom if necessary. Outside there is a 16m heated pool and a covered terrace for al fresco dining. It also has a private chapel that can be used for catholic ceremonies.

Style Notes

Countryside luxe. The property was renovated by an acclaimed Italian architect in 2017. The ancient stone-vaulted walls, antique furniture, mirrors and paintings are all genuine 18th century, while the kitchen and bathrooms lend a touch of modernity. This is French rural living with all of the luxury you would expect of a splendid house. Views from the grounds are of vineyards and fields and the house is set up for summer living with the pool and large terrace. We love the picture-perfect blue shutters, the kitchen, with white worktops and chrome offset by stone walls, and the generously-sized bedrooms.
